Released on 24 January 2023 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a nubuck upper in Black/White/Black/Gum Light Brown. Black with a gum sole is the default setting for a skate shoe, and the SB Dunk Low wears it better than most because the silhouette was a basketball shape before it was anything else. Nike SB rebuilt the Dunk for skating with more padding and more reinforcement, and then spent years earning credibility in a culture that did not ask for a sportswear giant, including a public correction in 2005 when it used Minor Threat's album art on a tour flyer, drew criticism from Ian MacKaye, apologised on 27 June that year and settled out of court. This is the version of the shoe with none of that noise attached, just black leather and a gum bottom.
Two ways. Skating: loose denim or cargos breaking over the collar, a plain tee, and the padded tongue absorbing what your ollie foot puts through it. Everyday: cuffed straight leg black jeans and a grey hoodie, where gum against black gives the outfit its only warmth. Works year round and takes bad weather better than any suede build. SB Dunks fit true, though the padded tongue makes the throat feel snug, so try with your usual sock. Clean black leather with mild soap, use an eraser block on the gum sole to lift scuffs, and avoid solvent cleaners, which cloud gum rubber permanently.
Nike became the shoe of basketball after 1984 and, through basketball, the shoe of hip hop, but skateboarding was a separate negotiation that took years and mistakes. The SB Dunk is the product of that negotiation and has become the most collected shape in Nike's range, which is a strange fate for a shoe designed to be destroyed. Black and gum is the honest end of that story: the pair skaters buy to skate rather than the pair collectors buy to keep. It is also the least dated colourway Nike sells on this silhouette.
The SB build differs from a standard Dunk in the ways that matter under a board: a thick padded tongue, extra collar cushioning to absorb landing impact, and reinforcement where grip tape shreds an upper first. The gum rubber outsole is the functional choice as much as the aesthetic one, because gum compounds grip a board surface differently from black rubber and wear in rather than out. A full black leather upper is the most durable material choice available on this silhouette, and it hides the marking that skating inevitably causes. Expect a flat, firm platform, good board feel and a genuinely short break in.
