Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 23 April 2019 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Black/White colourway. Jeff Staple's Pigeon Dunk is the shoe that dragged sneaker culture into daylight. When it landed at Reed Space on Manhattan's Lower East Side on February 22, 2005, over a hundred people had camped four days through a blizzard, police confiscated machetes and baseball bats, and the drop ended with riot squads pulling kids off the gates. The Panda Pigeon exists because Staple posted an old black-and-white test sample while moving offices and joked that it looked like a panda. The internet decided it wanted the joke made real. He came around once he saw the symbolism sitting there: the panda for China, his motherland, the pigeon for New York, his home. It released January 15, 2019, in Black, White and Green Gusto, style code BV1310-013, and Nike brought back the OG pink SB box just for it.
Utility
Two ways to run it. Loose raw denim or wide-leg carpenter pants with a plain white tee and a black work jacket lets the upper carry everything while the green gusto hits read as an accent rather than a theme. Second, black nylon track pants cuffed at the ankle with a grey hoodie, which pulls that pigeon grey inner swoosh forward. On sizing, the SB Dunk Low fits true to size, but the thick tongue and padded collar eat interior volume, so wide feet should take half a size up and anyone coming from a standard Dunk Low should expect a snugger ride. Nubuck is the maintenance job: dry-brush it after every wear, keep it out of rain, never machine wash. If you buy the SB Dunk Low Panda Pigeon in India, keep the pink box intact.
Influence
Staple called this the people's champ and meant it literally: if the community had not asked for the shoe, it would not exist. That is rare. Most grails are decreed from the top down, but the Panda Pigeon was voted in by a comment section. Its weight also comes from what it references. The 2005 Pigeon is the release that, in Staple's own telling, took sneakers from underground and nerdy to something investment bankers queued for, and this is the sequel you can actually own. The pink box matters more than it should: Nike was deep into the teal box era and resurrected the OG pink packaging only for this drop, which is why collectors keep the box as carefully as the shoes.
Construction
White leather carries the shoe, wrapped in smooth nubuck overlays that soften with wear instead of creasing hard, with perforations across the toe box so it breathes through a full day. The swoosh reads white on the outside and pigeon grey on the inside, a detail only the people who know will clock. The heel carries an embroidered pigeon motif and an embroidered Nike script in green. That OG padded tongue and cushioned collar are SB's actual reason for existing, built to absorb board impact, backed by a Zoom Air unit in the heel sockliner that keeps concrete off your feet. The sockliner reads S(T)AMPLE NOT FOR RESELL in green gusto. Underfoot, the clear outsole is filled with newspaper cuttings from the original riot coverage.
