Culture Note™
White and gum is the oldest agreement in skate footwear, and this SB Dunk Low takes the Dunk back to that plain arrangement: clean white panels, an amber gum outsole underneath. The Dunk was built in the mid 1980s as a college basketball shoe designed to be recoloured, and Nike SB later rebuilt it for skateboarding by thickening the padding and dropping in Zoom Air. Running it in white and gum is a statement about the shape rather than the colour. Nothing distracts from the seams, the Swoosh line and the low, wide stance. It is the version you buy when you want the shoe to be a shoe and not an announcement, which is why it never goes stale on a shelf.
This is the default. Wear it with mid blue straight leg denim, a white or grey tee and any outer layer you own, because white and gum refuses to clash with anything. For a smarter version, try cream chinos, a navy knit polo and a light jacket, where the gum sole reads as warmth rather than sport. Good for skating, long walks, travel days and standing all evening. Fits true to size. The maintenance is the honest part: white leather shows everything, so wipe it after each wear with a damp cloth, use a leather cleaner rather than bleach, and scrub the gum sidewall separately with a soft brush so the yellowing stays even instead of patchy.
The Dunk's life outside basketball began on skateboards and ended up in general fashion, and Nike SB spent two decades building that bridge. That programme carries a known scar: its 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's album art brought a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike. Meanwhile the wider brand's status in street style was built through basketball, from the 1984 Michael Jordan signing to the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising, which pulled Nike into hip hop and mainstream youth dress. A white and gum SB Dunk sits outside all that noise. It is the pair people actually skate and actually wear out.
White leather panels with a gum rubber outsole is a combination chosen for how it ages: the leather creases and greys into something with a history, and the gum darkens with wear. The SB build adds a padded tongue and collar for landing impact and a Zoom Air insole under the foot, cushioning that traces back to the same pressurised Air principle Nike put on show from 1987 onward, here hidden rather than displayed. The outsole is flat and grippy for board feel, and the midsole sits low, which is why the shoe feels direct and stable rather than bouncy. Sizing is true, with a snug padded collar that loosens after a week of real wear.
