Released on 26 November 2022 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a suede upper in Military Green/Black. This is a Dunk High SP built with SOULGOODS, and the 90s framing tells you which decade it is arguing about: the period when Nike silhouettes moved decisively out of arenas and into daily dress. The SP designation marks it as a special make of the model rather than a standard production run, which usually means different material choices and finishing than the general release. Nike has always let outside hands work on its shapes, from its long agency partnership with Wieden+Kennedy since 1976 to artist collaborations including work with Takashi Murakami on digital product in 2022. A collaborator taking the Dunk High is taking the version of the shoe with the most surface area to work with.
A high top special make is best worn where people can see it properly. Try loose straight jeans stacked just over the collar with a plain hoodie so the shoe is the only detailed thing you have on, or slim it down with cropped black trousers and a knit to make the collar height look deliberate. Occasion is casual daily wear, evenings and weekends rather than sport. Dunk Highs fit close and flat, so a half size up helps over thick socks, and lacing fully is what gives you the collar's support. Keep mixed material panels out of rain, brush dry before any wet cleaning, and store it away from direct light.
Nike's collaborative instinct is older and stranger than the current sneaker economy suggests. Its defining creative partnership is with Wieden+Kennedy from 1976, which produced Just Do It in 1988. It has paired with Apple on Nike+ to put run tracking in the shoe, bought the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT in December 2021 and worked with Takashi Murakami on digital product in 2022. Underneath all of it is a silhouette that became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward. A collaborator gets handed that accumulated meaning, which is why special makes of the Dunk High are read as statements rather than as variations.
The Dunk High's architecture is a tall padded collar, overlapping side panels, a long Swoosh run and a flat, wide court outsole. That collar is the functional difference from the Low: laced fully it supports the ankle, laced loose it gives the slouched shape people actually wear. An SP build typically changes material and finishing rather than the mould, so expect the same proportions with a different hand feel. Underfoot the ride is firm and flat with very little cushioning, which is standard for a court silhouette. Special makes often mix materials across panels, and mixed materials age unevenly, so clean each surface with the gentlest method that works rather than treating the whole shoe the same.
