Designed by Bill Bowerman and released on 21 June 2022 as part of Nike's Cortez line. This release has a textile upper in Grain/Pink Clay/Dutch Green/Bicycle Yellow/Blustery. The Cortez comes from the part of Nike that predates the Swoosh: Bill Bowerman's conviction that American runners were being sold shoes that were too heavy, the belief that pushed Blue Ribbon Sports out of a car boot at Oregon track meets in 1964 and eventually out of its Japanese supply deal in 1972. It is a running shoe from the era before cushioning became a spectacle, which is why it still looks so plain. This SP is co-signed by Union LA, and Sesame is its colour: a pale, warm off white with a beige cast, the sort of tone that makes a heritage runner look excavated rather than reissued.
A thin, pale runner sits best under a hem that lets it breathe. Wear it with cream or ecru wide leg trousers cropped at the ankle, a white tee and an unstructured brown jacket, so the shoe reads as part of a single warm palette. The contrast option: dark straight leg denim, a navy sweatshirt and a plain cap, letting the pale shoe brighten the bottom of the fit. Cortez sizing runs narrow, so wide feet should go half up and expect the toe box to feel close. There is minimal cushioning, so avoid all day standing. Protect the upper before wear, keep it away from rain, and clean immediately after use.
Nike's running credibility was established by Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon, who became the brand's first track endorser and its lasting emblem of running as attitude rather than sport, and who is commemorated by a statue at the company's headquarters. The Cortez belongs to that period, before basketball and hip hop turned Nike into a status brand from the 1980s onward. Bringing it back with an outside co-sign, as this SP does, is a way of putting a pre fame silhouette back into a conversation that moved on decades ago. It works because the shoe never tried to be impressive in the first place.
A Cortez is a low, narrow, thin soled shoe by modern standards, and that is the point of wearing it. There is no visible cushioning technology and no bulk, just a slim profile, a long Swoosh down the side and a wedge that lifts the heel slightly. Bowerman's waffle iron experiment came a little later and defined how Nike would build soles from then on, but the philosophy was already in place: take weight out, keep grip. On a Sesame makeup the pale, warm upper is the vulnerable part. Protect it before first wear, brush rather than scrub, and treat any suede or nubbin panels with a dedicated brush and eraser instead of water, which will stain a warm off white unevenly.
