Designed by Peter Moore and released on 17 February 2023 as part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Varsity Maize/Game Royal/Sail/Black/Fire Red. Nike signed Michael Jordan in 1984 and the deal did not stay a shoe deal for long: it became a line, and then a business with its own gravity inside the company. The Air Jordan 1 High OG is the original shape from that arrangement, and it has outlived every argument about basketball performance to become a pure design object. This women's pair runs Reverse Laney, which inverts the colour hierarchy of the Laney palette so Varsity Maize carries the body instead of playing accent, with the darker tones dropping back to overlays. Yellow is the hardest colour to put on a Jordan 1 because there is nowhere for it to hide. Reversing the blocking is what makes it work: the maize becomes the shoe rather than a stripe on it.
Two ways in. Let the maize dominate: dark indigo straight leg denim cuffed just above the collar, a black tee, no other yellow anywhere, so the shoe is the outfit's only bright surface. Or match it upward with a cream or oatmeal knit and light grey trousers, which softens the yellow and makes it read warm rather than loud. High tops suit cooler evenings, gigs, weekends and travel, and they look better with slimmer or straight legs than with anything that pools over the collar. Women's sizing runs narrow, so consider a half size up if you have a wide foot. Care matters on a yellow leather body: clean scuffs immediately, use a leather safe cleaner rather than detergent, and store away from sunlight since strong yellows shift tone over time.
The Jordan 1's cultural authority was built by advertising as much as by basketball: Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon spots turned the shoe into a character, and from the 1980s onward Air Jordans became fixed points in urban and hip hop dress, then in mainstream American youth uniform. It is worth clearing up the folklore around the early days, because the shoe cited under the NBA's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship prototype rather than the Air Jordan 1, and Nike paid the fines that resulted. Reverse Laney belongs to the modern chapter, where the 1's value comes from palette and treatment rather than performance claims. A women's exclusive colourway in this shape carries real weight because those releases have become the most collected part of the line.
High top leather upper with the Air Jordan 1's familiar architecture: toe cap, mid panel, eyestay, ankle collar and heel counter all cut as separate pieces and stitched, which is why colour blocking on this silhouette is so expressive. Varsity Maize is a strong, slightly warm yellow, and reversing the blocking puts it on the largest panels where leather grain and stitch lines are most visible. The women's build uses the OG shape and proportions with a last cut for a narrower foot. The Nike Air cushioning platform sits under the foot, the pressurised air unit sealed into the midsole that has been a Nike signature since the 1987 Air Max. High tops need a proper break in, so expect a week of stiffness.
