Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 17 August 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a nubuck upper in Black/Guava Ice/Sail/Black. Cut the Air Jordan 1 down to the ankle and you get the version that actually gets worn daily, and Guava Ice is the women's take that leans furthest from the Chicago palette. Black holds the overlays, the guava pink sits underneath as a warm, almost fruit sorbet ground, and the contrast does the work that red and white did on the 1985 original. That original was Peter Moore's design with Bruce Kilgore, built to sell a rookie Nike had just signed for six years and 2.5 million dollars. Forty seasons of retros later the shape is a house typeface, and colour is the sentence. Guava Ice belongs to a run of women's makeups where the pink is the point and the black is the frame.
Utility
Guava reads best against black or bleached denim, never both at once. Recipe one: black cropped trousers, a black fitted tee, an oversized grey blazer, so the pink is the only warm thing in frame and the black overlays tie back to the tailoring. Recipe two: light wash straight jeans, a white cotton shirt, and a guava or cream cardigan that echoes the quarter panel without matching it exactly. Low tops sit well with a no show sock, but a ribbed crew in cream is the better call when the jeans are cuffed. These are all day errands, transit and dinner shoes rather than gym shoes. Keep the pink away from raw denim on wet days, since indigo transfers onto pale leather and does not come back out.
Influence
Jordan Brand has been a division of Nike since 1997, and its reach now runs well past the court: sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team from 2016, sponsor of Paris Saint Germain from 2018, and a roster that includes Maya Moore and Jordin Canada in the WNBA alongside its NBA signings. That expansion is what makes a women's pastel low feel native rather than borrowed. The 1 was always the shoe hip hop reached for first, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z naming it in records, and the low cut is where that lineage stopped being a collector's object and became clothing.
Construction
Leather panelling on a low collar, so the shoe is on and off without ceremony and the ankle is left free. The black overlays are the structural pieces, toe cap, eyestay and heel wrap, and the guava sits on the quarter and the collar lining where it flashes as you walk. A flat rubber cupsole runs underneath with the forefoot pivot circle, giving the firm, close to the floor feel the 1 has always had rather than a cushioned running ride. Low cuts crease faster than highs because the forefoot flexes with nothing above it to distribute the bend, so wooden or plastic trees in the toe box between wears keep the leather honest. Wipe the pale midsole with a soft brush before marks set.
