Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 17 June 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Orange. Paisley is a print with a long migration, and putting it on the Dunk's overlay panels is a neat structural trick: the pattern lands only on the pieces that used to carry a team colour, so the shoe still reads as a two part design from a distance and only resolves into print up close. In orange, it is warm rather than decorative. The women's line is where Nike has been most willing to treat the Dunk as a fabric problem instead of a colour problem, and this is a clear example. The court silhouette stays intact and the surface does all the arguing, which is the opposite of how the model was originally designed to work.
Orange paisley wants a plain, warm wardrobe around it. Cream wide leg trousers with a white tank and a tan cardigan lets the print be the only pattern in play. For contrast, indigo denim with a black fitted top pulls the orange forward hard, which suits evening better than daylight. Keep prints away from rain and from light coloured bags that can rub against the panel. Sizing on the women's Dunk runs long, so a half size down is common. Rotate them rather than wearing daily: printed uppers hold up far better with rest days than with continuous wear, and the toe box is the first place to check.
Nike's relationship with pattern has occasionally been a lesson rather than a design choice. The company used the Beatles' Revolution in a 1987 campaign without Apple Records' approval, was sued, and pulled the ads in March 1988. Nike SB lifted Minor Threat's album art in 2005 and apologised publicly. Both cases pushed the company toward doing its own visual work rather than borrowing loaded imagery, and print led releases like this one sit on the safe side of that line: a traditional motif, executed in house, on a silhouette the brand owns outright. It is decoration with nobody to answer to.
A women's Dunk Low with printed overlay panels over a plain base, padded collar, foam sockliner and a rubber cupsole. Printed material behaves differently to dyed leather: the pattern sits on the surface, so abrasion at the toe and the outer edge of the pinky toe will take the print off before it damages the panel underneath. Clean with a damp cloth and a light touch, never a stiff brush on the printed sections, and skip solvent cleaners entirely. Underfoot it is the standard flat Dunk experience, firm and low, better for walking than standing. Expect the base panels to crease normally while the printed overlays hold their shape longer.
