Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 10 October 2022 as part of the Yeezy Quantum line. This release has a primeknit upper in Hi-Res Coral/Hi-Res Coral/Hi-Res Coral. Hi-Res Coral takes the Quantum, the most technical looking shape the label ever built, and names its colour after a screen setting rather than a substance. That is a real departure. The palette that made this line famous ran on Pirate Black, Oxford Tan, Turtle Dove and Moonrock, colours named for terrain and material, and Hi-Res belongs to a different vocabulary entirely, the language of displays and resolution. Coral fits it: a saturated pink red that looks more convincing on a screen than in daylight, which is exactly what the name admits. On a tall basketball derived silhouette with structural panelling, that digital colour makes the shoe read as rendered rather than manufactured, which is a strange and specific effect.
Utility
Coral is warm and loud, so the outfit around it should be cold and quiet. First recipe: black technical trousers with an elasticated cuff, a black tee, a black shell jacket, letting the shoe be the only colour in the frame. Second recipe: light grey sweatpants with a white tee, tonal and soft, so the coral reads as bright rather than aggressive. Avoid red, orange and pink clothing, which will fight it. Occasion: casual daytime, festivals, street, though this is a fashion take on a court shoe rather than a playing shoe. Fit is high volume with ankle coverage, so true to size usually works. Care: wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap, treat scuffs early, and limit long sun exposure to slow fading.
Influence
The Quantum represents the line's attempt to earn performance credibility rather than just silhouette recognition, arriving after the runner shapes had already been copied across every tier of the market. Around it sat the drop model the label invented: limited stock, announced release times, queues, bots and a resale economy that mainstream retail then imitated. At its peak the partnership generated roughly two billion dollars a year for adidas. adidas terminated it on 25 October 2022 following Kanye West's antisemitic public remarks, which the company stated were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous and violated its values, so the basketball direction closed unfinished.
Construction
The Quantum is a multi part structural build, with panels and a tall midsole assembled into a shape that stands up on its own rather than collapsing like a knit runner. Boost, the expanded TPU pellet foam that gave the line its bounce and its distinctive speckled look, sits in the cushioning underneath. Coral is applied in large blocked areas rather than as trim, so the colour carries the volume and the structural lines show as shadow. There is no visible logo anywhere, which on a shape this assertive is genuinely unusual. Expect a supportive high volume fit with real ankle coverage and a heavier shoe than anything in the 350 family, plus visible scuffing on lighter sections.
