Released on 19 July 2022 and part of Nike's Zoom Fly 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Mint Foam/Ghost Green/Coconut Milk/Cave Purple. Every generation of Nike running comes down to foam. Lunarlite made shoes lighter, React made them durable, and ZoomX, the altered Pebax material used in the Vaporfly, made them genuinely springy, which is why plated racing shoes reset the sport's expectations. The Zoom Fly 5 is the everyday translation of that work: a plated trainer built to survive a training block rather than a single race. Mint Foam is the softest colourway in the line, a pale green wash across an aggressive shoe, and the contrast is the appeal. It looks calm and behaves like a tool, which is a fair description of most good running equipment.
Give it the quality sessions. Tempo runs, marathon pace work and progression long runs are where a plated trainer justifies itself, worn with thin technical socks and standard kit. Second use is race day for anyone not buying a dedicated racer, and Mint Foam is a genuinely pleasant off duty shoe with black joggers and a plain tee. Size half up from your casual size and expect a snug midfoot. Rotate with a softer daily trainer so your legs and the foam both recover, keep them on roads rather than trails, and clean the pale upper gently with mild soap and a soft brush, air drying away from heat rather than machine washing.
Nike's running authority is founding, not acquired. Bill Bowerman, the University of Oregon track coach, started Blue Ribbon Sports with Phil Knight in 1964 because he believed American runners deserved lighter and better shoes than the domestic market offered, and he later ruined his wife's waffle iron proving the point. That impulse ran forward into ZoomX and the carbon plate, which peer research found could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, and eventually into rules: World Athletics capped sole thickness at 40mm and permitted one rigid plate on 31 January 2020. The plated trainer is that entire argument condensed into a shoe you wear on a Tuesday evening.
A durable foam midsole with a plate running through it, engineered to produce the rolling, tipping ride that plated shoes are bought for without the fragility of race day foam. The upper is engineered mesh with minimal overlays, following the thinking Nike formalised with Flywire: hold the foot with cables and pattern rather than layers of material. Mint Foam covers the upper in a pale green, which means road grime shows early, and the outsole rubber is placed in wear zones to keep weight down. Nike's material research also runs through Nike Grind, which recycles manufacturing scrap and worn shoes back into new product and surfaces.
