Origin
Released on 1 May 2024 and part of Nike's ZoomX Invincible line. This release has a flyknit upper in White/Black/Bright Crimson/Sail White/All Orange/Fluorescent Yellow. Bright crimson is a wake up colour and that is precisely the brief. The Invincible Run is Nike's maximum cushioning daily trainer, the shoe built around ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam that is the lightest and most responsive material in the company's range and the same family of foam used in the Vaporfly. Where the Vaporfly was designed for racing, with a full length carbon fibre plate added in 2017 to generate extra spring, the Invincible takes the foam alone and gives it to everyday runners for volume mileage. The lineage is straight from 1964, when Bowerman built the company on the belief that runners deserved lighter, better shoes than the market offered.
Utility
For running, this is your easy day and long day shoe: pair it with black shorts and a light singlet, and let the crimson be the only colour you own on the road. Off duty, wear it with grey sweatpants and a black hoodie, where the bright upper works as a deliberate accent rather than as kit. Best for road miles, recovery runs and long days on your feet; it is not a track spike or a trail shoe. Take your usual running size and allow room at the toe for foot swell over distance. Never machine wash ZoomX, and air dry away from heat to protect the foam.
Influence
Nike's running credibility is its oldest asset. Steve Prefontaine was the first track athlete the brand endorsed, and running as attitude rather than as a sport has been the company's position ever since, extended into culture by Just Do It, written in 1988 and first aired with 80 year old runner Walt Stack. ZoomX changed the conversation again: peer research on the Vaporfly found it could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, which pushed World Athletics to set rules on 31 January 2020 capping sole thickness at 40mm and limiting shoes to one rigid plate. Compliant models remain legal.
Construction
Two things define this shoe: a tall ZoomX midsole and a Flyknit upper. ZoomX is Nike's altered Pebax foam, chosen because it returns more energy per gram than anything else the brand makes, which is why it sits under the Vaporfly. Flyknit gives a one piece knitted upper that stretches where the foot needs room and holds where it needs support, part of Nike's long project of containing the foot with less material, the same thinking that produced Flywire cabling. Rubber is placed only at the wear points to protect the foam without adding weight. In bright crimson the knit reads as a single saturated block, with the sole carrying the same intensity.
