Released on 1 January 2024 and part of Nike's ZoomX VaporFly Next% 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in Luminous Green/Crimson Tint/Volt/Black. Ekiden is the Japanese long distance relay format, run in stages with a sash passed between team members, and naming a Vaporfly pack after it points the shoe at exactly the kind of running it was built for. The Vaporfly launched in 2017 and is the most consequential shoe Nike has made in decades: ZoomX, its altered Pebax foam and the lightest and most responsive material in its range, paired with a full length carbon fibre plate designed to generate extra spring in every step. Peer research found the combination could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent. The third generation is that idea after two rounds of refinement.
Two uses. Second, one key session per training block, so you arrive at the race already familiar with how the plate feels under fatigue. Size as you would other Nike racers, snug, with a thin technical sock and nothing else. Do not use it for easy mileage: ZoomX loses response long before the outsole looks worn, and slow miles waste it. Log the mileage so you know when the foam is done. Air dry only, keep it away from heat, and store it flat rather than compressed.
This is the shoe that forced its sport to write new rules. World Athletics issued regulations on 31 January 2020 capping sole thickness at 40mm, permitting one rigid plate and requiring four months of general retail availability. The Vaporfly was not banned: limits were set, and compliant models remain legal, which is the correction worth making whenever this shoe comes up. Underneath is Nike's oldest credential, a track coach at the University of Oregon who thought runners deserved lighter shoes, and Steve Prefontaine as the first track endorser whose statue stands at the company's headquarters. Japan's relay culture is where much of this technology gets tested in public.
Foam and plate, working as one system. ZoomX gives the energy return, and the full length carbon plate stops the soft foam from collapsing laterally, converting compression into forward motion instead of into wobble. The upper is stripped to almost nothing, engineered to hold the foot with minimal material in the same tradition as Flywire cabling, because at this level every gram is a decision. Style code FQ8109 331 confirms this execution. Fit is snug and race specific, with no forgiveness built in.
