Released on 14 July 2023 and part of Nike's ZoomX VaporFly Next% 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in Racer Blue/White/Black/High Voltage/Sundial. Racer Blue with Sundial is a start line colourway, cool blue lifted by a warm gold tone, and the Vaporfly is the shoe that made start lines interesting again. Since its 2017 launch it has combined ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam, with a full length carbon fibre plate, a pairing peer research linked to marathon improvements of up to 4.2 percent. Whatever your view of that number, the shoe reorganised how distance runners think about equipment. This third Next Percent generation inherits all of it, and a bright colourway is appropriate: nobody buys this shoe to be discreet about their intentions on race morning.
Two uses. One, race day: half marathons and marathons at goal pace, with thin technical socks and laces just tight enough that your heel does not lift, since the platform punishes sloppy foot hold. Two, race preparation: a few tempo or progression runs in the final weeks so the plate feels familiar rather than novel. Do not do easy running in these. The foam has a limited competitive life and easy pace wastes it. After a race, wipe rather than wash, remove any grit from the outsole, air dry in shade, and store them flat so the plate and foam keep their geometry.
Nike's racing authority runs through decades of sponsored track athletes, from Steve Prefontaine as its first track endorser to Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix, and the Vaporfly is where that lineage met materials science hard enough to change the sport's rules. When World Athletics stepped in during January 2020, it was regulating an advantage that had become impossible to ignore, including by requiring that shoes be openly available at retail rather than reserved for a sponsored few. Racing footwear has been a fairness question ever since, which is a strange and rather impressive thing for a shoe company to have caused.
Race day construction is about giving back energy, not about lasting forever. ZoomX is the lightest and most responsive foam Nike makes, and the full length carbon plate running through it is designed to add spring to each step. That combination wants speed. Run slowly on it and the platform feels tall and vague; run at your target pace and it makes sense. The upper is minimal by design, which keeps weight down and durability modest. World Athletics rules issued on 31 January 2020 cap sole thickness at 40mm and permit one rigid plate, and compliant Vaporfly models remain legal to race in.
