Origin
Part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Sea Salt/Raincloud/Black. Three tones, none of them loud: incense, raincloud and arid stone read like paint chips from a studio rather than sneaker colours, and that is the register the 9060 does best. The silhouette takes the visual language of the 99x runners, a family that ran from the 990 in 1982 through the 991, 992 and 993, and distorts it, adding volume and curve where the originals kept their lines straight. A smoky brown against grey and pale sand suits that distortion, because the eye reads the shape before it reads the colour. New Balance built its reputation making shoes people bought for fit rather than looks, so a silhouette this sculptural still needs a muted palette to stay believable.
Utility
Earth tones want texture around them. Recipe one: brown corduroy or heavy cotton trousers with a cream knit, so the incense and stone shades sit inside a matched palette and the grey stops it going flat. Recipe two: black cargo trousers with a stone coloured tee, using the shoe to link the two ends. Steer clear of bright white socks, which cut the tonal effect in half; go ecru or grey. The silhouette is tall and wide, so tapered or cropped hems keep the proportions right. Brush the suede weekly, spray a protector before first wear, and clean the light sand panels before dirt sets rather than after.
Influence
The Made in England 99x models had a life of their own in British terrace and casual dressing, running parallel to the American dad shoe story, and New Balance still operates a UK factory, opened at Workington in 1982 and moved to Flimby in 1991. That European strand is why muted, earthy New Balance colourways feel native rather than styled: this is a brand whose fans have always preferred understatement bordering on drab. A three tone brown, grey and sand build belongs to that tradition even on a silhouette this exaggerated. The shape is the loud part, the palette is the apology, and the combination is what makes the 9060 wearable by people who would never wear a statement sneaker.
Construction
The upper layers mesh and suede in three separate tones, which is why the panelling is so easy to read: each overlay is a different shade rather than a different texture alone. Mesh handles breathability across a tall, enclosed shape, suede takes the wear at the toe and heel, and the tonal split keeps a bulky shoe from looking like a single mass. ABZORB does the cushioning, New Balance's proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend built to disperse heel strike impact before it travels into the knees and hips, softer and lighter than the ENCAP polyurethane and EVA system that gives the 990 its structure. The side wall N and the brand's multiple width fittings carry over unchanged.
