Released on 31 March 2024 and part of adidas's adiFOM Superstar Mule line. This release has a eva upper in Core Black/Cloud White/Cloud White. This is the inverted version of the foam Superstar mule: black body, white detailing, which flips the colour logic of a shoe whose fame is built on a white upper with dark stripes. That inversion does something useful. The white pair announces the reference immediately, while the black one lets you wear the silhouette without the shell toe doing all the talking, and on a moulded foam object where the shape is already exaggerated, less contrast is easier to live with. Underneath the material change is still a 1969 basketball shoe, reduced to its outline and rebuilt as something you step into at the door.
Black foam is the more flexible of the two colourways. Wear it with black sweat shorts and a grey tee for home and neighbourhood use, or with wide black trousers and a black overshirt for a tonal fit where the white detailing is the only break. White crew socks give the strongest contrast, black socks make the shoe disappear into the outfit. There is no heel and no support, so keep walking distances short and avoid wet streets where a backless sole slips. Rinse with cool water and mild soap when it dulls, dry in shade, and never leave it anywhere hot enough to soften the foam.
The Superstar is the shoe adidas did not have to sell twice. It came off the court, where a reported 75 percent of NBA players wore it by 1973, and into hip hop, where Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid before the first ever endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company followed in 1986. Questlove has called the Madison Square Garden night that triggered it hip hop's tipping point. Everything since, including a backless foam mule, trades on that recognition. In black, the joke is quieter and the shoe reads more as a product design exercise than as a costume, which is why it is the version most people actually wear out.
One piece moulded foam, black throughout, with white picking out the stripes and branding so the shell toe relief still reads across the front. Black foam has a practical advantage over white: it hides the greying and surface marks that make a light foam shoe look tired fast, which makes this the more realistic pair for regular use. With no heel counter, fit is decided at the instep and by the volume of your foot rather than by lacing, so it will feel different on the first walk than any laced shoe you own. Heat is still the enemy. Direct sun and hot car interiors permanently distort moulded foam and there is no fixing it once it goes.
