Released on 29 November 2024 and part of the AE 1 line. This release has a tpu upper in Iron Metallic/Core Black/Solar Orange. The AE 1 is the shoe that put adidas back into the signature basketball conversation, and the Low is the version built for players who want less collar and more freedom at the ankle. Iron Sharpens Iron is a themed colourway, and the phrase itself sets the tone: competitive, blunt, built around the idea that you are only as good as who you play against. adidas has been making court shoes since the Superstar arrived in 1969 with a rubber shell toe designed to protect players under the basket, a shoe that a reported 75 percent of NBA players were wearing by 1973. A signature low is the modern continuation of that job, tuned for a faster and more perimeter driven game.
On court: play them with performance socks and lace fully so the heel stays locked, since a low top gives you less margin on lateral cuts. Off court: black or grey wide trousers with a plain hoodie, letting the shoe read as the only sport reference, or baggy denim and a team tee if you want the basketball context to be obvious. Suited to games, gym sessions and casual wear. Buy true to size and test with your playing socks. Rotate pairs if you play often, keep the outsole clean for grip, and let them dry fully between sessions so the interior does not break down.
adidas basketball is where the brand's sport authority and its street authority meet. The Superstar's adoption by hip hop gave adidas a second life it did not design, and the brand's court shoes have carried cultural weight ever since. James Harden is a signature basketball athlete for adidas, which shows the shape of the modern programme: individual players given their own line, their own design language and their own themed releases. Iron Sharpens Iron speaks to that culture directly, as a slogan aimed at people who take the competitive framing of basketball seriously.
Low top basketball design is a trade: you give up some ankle coverage in return for range of motion, and the shoe has to make up for it with a firmly held heel and a wide, stable base. That is the same design instinct that produced the shell toe, reinforcing the specific area that takes the punishment. The Three Stripes are structural in origin, bought from Karhu Sports in 1952 and stitched on to hold the upper together. Themed colourways sit on surfaces that flex hard in play, so expect creasing if you actually hoop in them. Wipe the outsole before indoor sessions for traction and clean the midsole rather than scrubbing printed panels.
