This release has a canvas upper in Beige/Brown. adidas effectively invented the modern fashion designer sneaker partnership, starting with Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line and Stella McCartney in 2004 and running through Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang. The Gucci partnership is the version where an Italian luxury house takes an adidas silhouette rather than a designer building a sub label, and the Gazelle is the right shoe for it: a suede terrace classic with a slim last and a low profile that reads elegant rather than athletic. This women's pair in beige and brown puts the house's Original GG monogram against the Three Stripes, two of the most recognisable marks in their respective industries sharing a single upper. The style code on this pair follows Gucci's numbering rather than adidas's, which tells you which side manufactured it.
Recipe one: cream wide leg trousers with a chocolate brown knit, matching the darker tone in the monogram so the shoe looks integrated rather than pasted on. Recipe two: a mid wash denim maxi skirt with a plain white shirt, where the beige base keeps the whole look warm and the brown trim picks up a tan bag. The Gazelle's shape does the rest: a slim last, a low collar, a thin outsole and the Three Stripes running along the sidewall, stitched into the upper where they reinforce it as well as mark it, a role the stripes have had since adidas bought them from Karhu Sports in 1952. Beige and brown is a tonal pairing that lets the monogram read as texture at a distance and as branding up close. Expect a flat ride with minimal cushioning and a shoe that is meant to be looked at rather than trained in.
