Released on 10 April 2024 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Blue Blink/Wonder Clay/Sand Strata. Blue Blink against Wonder Clay is a colour pairing with a fashion department behind it, a bright pale blue set against a soft muted terracotta, two shades that would never have appeared together on a sports shoe made for a sports hall. That is the point. The Gazelle Indoor is a gym floor silhouette that adidas Originals now uses as a canvas, and Originals is the division that inherited the Trefoil after the three angled bars took over performance branding in 1997. The Trefoil was designed in 1971 for the 1972 Munich Olympics and carried the whole company for twenty six years, and it is what makes an unlikely colour pairing still read as archive adidas. Clay and pale blue are both mid tone colours, so you want quiet around them. Wear it with cream or off white trousers and a white shirt for a warm, soft outfit where the shoe sets the palette, or with washed light denim and a rust or brown knit that picks the clay tone up deliberately. Do not add a third colour. The flat, thin sole is comfortable for a few hours of walking and unforgiving beyond that. Pale panels stain fast, so treat the pair before first wear, brush dust off dry, and address any mark on the light blue immediately, since terracotta hides wear far better than pale blue does.
adidas effectively invented the modern fashion designer sneaker partnership, running Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line, Stella McCartney from 2004, then Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang through its archive shapes. The lasting effect of that programme is not the collaboration shoes themselves, it is that the in house colour teams inherited permission to be strange. A pale blue and clay Gazelle is the everyday result: a shoe whose palette comes from a fashion mood board rather than from a club kit, sold at general release rather than as a designer drop.
A two colour build with a warm tone against a cool one asks the panelling to do real work, because the eye reads the boundary between the shades before it reads the shape. On the Gazelle Indoor those boundaries fall on the Three Stripes, the heel patch and the toe, which is exactly where adidas has always split colour. The stripes themselves began as reinforcement stitched onto the upper rather than as a logo, so a contrast stripe is showing you the structural seam, not just a graphic.
