Released on 1 October 2023 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Maroon/Chalk White/Gum. The Gazelle is the shoe that proves how little adidas needs to make something recognisable: a suede upper, three stitched stripes, a slim rubber sole and a serif logo on the side. It came out of the era when the company built training shoes for athletes across events, the working method Adolf Dassler set up in Herzogenaurach when he watched competitors instead of guessing what they needed. Maroon takes the Gazelle away from the primary colours it is usually sold in and into something closer to a wardrobe colour, a deep, slightly brown red that sits well against the warm gum sole. It is the version of this shoe you buy when you already own it in blue or red and want one you can wear with everything.
Two routes. Mid grey trousers with a cream knit and a navy jacket lets the maroon function as the accent, the way a good tie or a scarf would, since maroon and grey is a pairing that never misfires. Or go tonal and warm: brown or tan chinos, an oatmeal sweatshirt, and the gum sole ties the whole thing together. Avoid black trousers with maroon suede, which flattens the colour to a muddy tone. The Gazelle runs narrow and low with minimal cushioning, so half size up if your foot is wide. Suede needs a protector spray before first wear, a brush after each outing, and a rubber eraser rather than water on scuffs.
adidas Originals is built from shoes that were adopted rather than promoted, and the numbers show how far that can travel: at the Superstar's peak adidas sold more than 15 million pairs of it in a single year, decades after the shoe left the basketball court. The Gazelle's version of that story is quieter and more European, running through terrace culture, indie bands and art schools, with most people buying it for the colour rather than for the reference. It has never needed a celebrity or a collaboration to hold its place in the catalogue. Maroon has no scene attached to it at all, which is precisely why it works now: the shape carries the history and the colour stays out of the argument.
Suede does the talking. The Gazelle's upper is a single tone of nubuck with almost no panelling, so the material quality and the depth of the dye are the entire visual argument, and maroon in suede reads far richer than the same colour would in coated leather. The Three Stripes are stitched through the sidewall as structure, the way adidas has treated them since buying the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952. Underneath, a slim gum rubber sole keeps the profile low and puts the foot close to the ground, which is why the shoe feels precise and not cushioned. Expect the toe to crease into one fold, the gum to darken to honey, and the suede nap to flatten where the foot flexes.
