Origin
Released on 1 October 2023 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Shadow Navy/Clear Blue/Gum. The Gazelle began as a training shoe, one of the purpose built models adidas produced in the era when the company designed around a specific athletic problem and let the styling follow. Its suede upper and slim profile made it the softest looking thing in the range, which is why it escaped sport faster than almost anything else adidas made. The Shadow treatment shifts the shoe into a lower contrast key, with the branding and stripe work sunk into the upper rather than laid on top. Navy with Clear Blue is the sharpest possible reading of that idea: a deep, almost black base with a cool blue lift running through it, so the shoe changes character depending on how much light is hitting it.
Utility
Two recipes. First, night register: black or charcoal trousers with a navy overshirt, where Clear Blue is the only cool accent and the fit stays dark without going monotone. Second, casual daylight: mid wash denim and a grey sweat, letting the navy suede read as the smartest thing you are wearing. Good for dinners, gigs, and days where you need one shoe from morning to late. The Gazelle runs narrow and slightly long, so go true unless you have a broad foot, in which case size up half. Suede is the weak point: protect it before first wear, brush the nap dry, never scrub wet, and keep it out of monsoon puddles which will stain navy permanently.
Influence
The Gazelle sits in the same terrace lineage as the Samba and the Stan Smith, the shoes that became the base layer of European football and casual dressing and turned Originals into a permanent business. That lineage is not about performance, it is about knowledge: people wore these because other people in the stands wore them, a self reinforcing loop adidas benefited from without commissioning. The Trefoil, designed in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics, is the mark that now flags this side of the company. A tonal navy Gazelle is the version for people fluent in that history who do not need the shoe to announce it.
Construction
The Gazelle is soft by design. Its plush upper sits over a thin sole unit and moulds to the foot within days, which is why it creases early and why nobody minds. The Three Stripes run along the sidewall, doing the double duty they have done since adidas bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952, working as reinforcement as much as identity. In a Shadow execution the stripes are tonal against the base, so the shoe reads as a single volume rather than as panels. Navy across the upper with Clear Blue accents means the contrast lives in the details, at the stripe edge and the heel tab. Expect low stack, direct ground feel and a shoe that gets better looking as it ages.
