Released on 14 November 2024 and part of the Handball line. This release has a cordura upper in Focus Olive/Silver Pebble/Shadow Olive. Take the Handball Spezial, a shoe adidas built for a fast indoor court sport, and swap its suede for Cordura, and you get a different proposition. The silhouette still comes from the same instinct that started the company, Adolf Dassler making purpose built shoes for specific athletic events rather than general purpose trainers. Focus Olive keeps it in utility territory: a flat, slightly grey green that belongs to field jackets and duffel bags rather than to sportswear brights. The result reads less like a retro court shoe and more like something issued. If the standard Spezial is a terrace shoe, this one is the version built to survive a commute, a worksite and a wet week.
Olive and technical fabric want workwear proportions. Try black or ecru double knee trousers, a heavy grey sweatshirt and a waxed jacket, or dark tapered cargos with a black merino crew and a beanie for cold evenings. Because Cordura shrugs off water and marks far better than suede, this is the Spezial you actually wear in the rain and on grimy commutes, though the thin sole still leaves you feeling the ground. It runs low volume and narrow like the rest of the family, so size up half if your foot is wide. Clean with a damp cloth as marks appear and air dry away from direct heat.
adidas Originals exists because performance shoes kept getting adopted outside their sport, the way the Superstar and Stan Smith became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing. The Spezial family belongs to the quieter end of that story, a shoe with local rather than global recognition. Putting Cordura on it plugs the silhouette into the utility and workwear side of contemporary dressing, where fabric choice carries as much information as shape. Nobody buys this to signal a sport. They buy it because a technical fabric in a flat military green says something specific about how they dress, and the court silhouette keeps it from tipping into costume.
Cordura is the story here. It is a technical fabric chosen for abrasion resistance, which means the upper takes scuffing that would tear the nap off suede, and it holds the flat Focus Olive tone without the depth shifts suede gives. The Three Stripes are stitched across the quarter as always, a structural habit adidas kept from the era when it bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952 and used the stripes to reinforce the upper. Below sits the low profile court outsole the Spezial is built around, thin and grippy rather than cushioned. Cordura cleans far more easily than suede: a damp cloth and mild soap lifts most marks without changing the colour.
