Released on 3 April 2023 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a suede upper in Crystal White/Clay Strata/Gum 5. The Samba was built for football on frozen ground, an indoor and hard surface shoe designed to give players contact and grip when a pitch would not cooperate, and it has stayed in production long enough to outlive the conditions that created it. Clay Strata is the interesting decision here. Instead of the black or white the model is known for, this pair is finished in a dusty earth tone, the colour of dry ground rather than of a kit, which pulls the Samba away from sport and towards something closer to a considered daily shoe. It is the sort of colourway that ages visually well, because it starts out looking slightly worn rather than crisp.
Two builds. Tonal warmth: brown or khaki trousers with a slight stack, a cream shirt or knit, and the shoe blends into a soft palette rather than punctuating it. Or contrast: black wide leg trousers and a black jacket, where the clay tone becomes the single warm note in a cold fit. Right for daily wear, offices with a loose code, travel and dry weather. Wrong for rain, where suede takes visible water rings. Sambas run long and narrow: half a size down for most, true to size if your foot is wide. Protect the suede before first wear, brush with a suede brush rather than washing, and clean the gum sole early with a damp cloth, since gum darkens with age and will not come back.
The Samba became a genuine cultural staple without a campaign behind it, which is the recurring pattern with adidas. The Superstar was adopted by hip hop after dominating the NBA, with Run-DMC writing My Adidas unpaid in 1986 before the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company followed. The terrace shoes were picked up by football casuals. The Samba got the same treatment from a generation that wanted something flat, narrow and undramatic after years of chunky footwear. A muted earth colourway is what you release when the shape is already established enough that it does not need to introduce itself.
A Samba OG is a study in restraint. Low profile, flat sole, a suede toe overlay at the point where a football strikes the shoe, the Three Stripes stitched down the flank in the structural tradition adidas has used since the stripes reinforced the upper, and a gum toned outsole for grip on hard surfaces. In a clay tone the usual contrast between panels compresses, so the shoe reads as one warm mass with the material change from smooth to suede doing the separating. That earthy palette also disguises dust and light dirt, which makes it far more forgiving than white in real wear, though it will still show water marks on the suede.
