Released on 7 March 2024 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Cloud White/Collegiate Burgundy/Gum. The J in the name marks the junior size run, which is the quiet reason this pair matters: the Samba is one of the few adidas silhouettes that reaches a child and an adult without changing its argument. The shoe was built for footballers training on frozen ground, and the OG designation keeps those archival proportions rather than a modernised last. White with Collegiate Burgundy and gum is a university sports palette, a deep wine red against a bright leather body with a caramel sole. Burgundy is a more grown up choice than the usual black or blue overlays, which is what makes this version circulate well beyond the size run it was cut for.
Recipe one: dark straight leg denim with a burgundy or maroon knit, matching the overlays so the palette looks chosen rather than accidental. Recipe two: grey school style trousers with a white shirt and a navy crewneck, where the burgundy warms an otherwise cold uniform palette. Junior lasts run narrow and long like the adult ones, so check width before length and expect the leather to widen rather than lengthen. This is a flat, low cushioned shoe, so it is better for school runs and evenings than for full days on hard floors. Keep the suede dry, brush it with a crepe brush, and lift grey off the gum sole with an eraser sponge before it sets.
The Samba's route into everyday wear was made by wearers, which is how adidas has always gained ground. Run-DMC released My Adidas unpaid and had thousands hold their shell toes up at Madison Square Garden with an adidas executive present, and the endorsement that followed was the first between a musical act and an athletic company. The Superstar and the Stan Smith became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing on the same logic. A junior Samba is what ubiquity looks like at the end of the cycle: the shoe reaches an age group that has no memory of any of that history and wears it purely because it looks right.
This is the standard Samba build in a smaller grade: leather upper, suede T shaped toe overlay covering the zone a footballer wears through first, Three Stripes stitched through the sidewall where they reinforce the panels as well as brand them, and a gum rubber outsole with almost no stack height. adidas has used the stripes structurally since acquiring the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952, and the suede toe follows the same protective instinct that put a moulded rubber shell toe on the Superstar in 1969. Burgundy overlays on white leather will show scuffing on the light panels first. Grade school construction typically runs slightly lighter through the sole and softer in the collar than the adult pattern.
