Part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Semi Blue Burst/Almost Yellow/Cloud White. The Gazelle Indoor is the harder, flatter cousin of the standard Gazelle, an indoor court shape with a wider toe, a lower stance and a sole built for grip on a wooden floor rather than a street. Blue Burst Yellow puts it in a full contrast pairing, a saturated blue upper against yellow stripes and trim, which is the colour logic adidas used on team sport shoes long before it became a fashion decision. This is the women's cut. What you are buying is a competition shoe that never had to be redesigned to work as a lifestyle shoe, which is the whole Originals proposition under the Trefoil, the 1971 mark launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics.
Blue and yellow is a sports colourway, so either commit to it or neutralise it. Recipe one: commit, with cream wide leg trousers and a plain white tee, so the shoe supplies all the colour and the outfit stays quiet above the ankle. Recipe two: neutralise, with indigo denim and a navy knit, where the blue upper melts into the outfit and only the yellow stripe reads. Best for daytime, weekends and travel. The Indoor last is wider and shallower than the standard Gazelle, so if you have a low volume foot go true to size and use the top eyelet. Brush the blue suede in one direction, treat the yellow trim with a suede eraser, and keep it out of monsoon puddles.
Terrace and casual dressing in Europe made the Gazelle a staple by treating an unremarkable training shoe as a badge, which is the same mechanism that put the Superstar on hip hop's feet after Run-DMC released My Adidas on 29 May 1986 and had Madison Square Garden raise their shell toes that July, unpaid. Questlove has described that as hip hop's tipping point. The Gazelle Indoor's revival runs on colour: it is the model people buy in pairs because each colourway reads as a different shoe. adidas has leaned into that through collaborators from Stella McCartney to Jeremy Scott, but the base model carries itself.
Suede upper with a broad toe, suede Three Stripes running the full flank, and a flat gum style sole with almost no heel lift. Indoor court shoes are built to keep your foot close to the ground and to let you feel the floor, which is why this last is wider and lower than the standard Gazelle and why the padding is minimal. Blue against yellow is a high contrast pairing, so any dirt on the yellow trim registers immediately while the blue suede hides wear well. The Three Stripes are stitched rather than applied, the same construction adidas has used since it bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952, when the stripes reinforced the upper.
