Released on 31 December 2023 and part of the Handball line. This release has a leather upper in Cream White/Wonder Beige/Magic Beige. The Handball Spezial belongs to the oldest instinct in the company, the one Adolf Dassler carried out of his mother's laundry room in Herzogenaurach: build a shoe for one sport, watched closely, rather than a general purpose trainer. Indoor handball asked for a low, wide, grippy shoe that could stop dead on a polished floor, and the Spezial answered that brief inside the same indoor court programme that produced the rest of the family. Originals later pulled it back out because the proportions read as clothing rather than equipment. This women's pair in Cream White and Wonder Beige takes the loudest thing about the shoe, the Three Stripes, and turns the volume down until the stripe reads as texture, not signage. It is the Spezial for people who want the shape without the announcement.
Utility
Two ways to wear it. First, full tonal: cream or ecru wide leg trousers with a cropped knit, letting the Wonder Beige stripe disappear into the outfit so the shape does the work. Second, contrast: dark indigo straight jeans with a cuff that breaks just above the collar, which makes the pale upper pop as the brightest point in the fit. It suits long days on foot, gallery to dinner, more than it suits sport. Sizing runs slim and low volume, so if you wear a thicker sock or have a broad foot, try a half size up. Cream shows everything, so brush the upper dry before it sets, keep it away from wet monsoon streets, and treat the midsole edge with a soft eraser rather than harsh cleaner.
Influence
adidas has been carried by two currents, sport and then music, and the indoor court shoes sat in the drift between them. The Spezial lives in that terrace lineage rather than the American one: a shoe worn in stands and on high streets by people who liked that it looked borrowed from a sports hall. Construction
Read this one as a court shoe first. The low, flat build and the wide footprint exist because handball players change direction on a hard indoor surface, and the Three Stripes on the sidewall are structural in origin, stitched on to reinforce the upper long before anyone treated them purely as a logo. That is why they sit where they do and why the shoe holds its shape through the flex point. The Cream White upper and Wonder Beige stripes keep the panel seams visible instead of hiding them, so the construction is the decoration here. Expect a firm, thin ride rather than cushioning: this silhouette was never built for distance, and it will feel direct underfoot in the way court shoes are supposed to.
