Culture Note™
Released on 1 June 2025 and part of adidas's Samba Jane line. This release has a leather upper in Footwear White/Carbon/Core Black. The Samba Jane takes an indoor football silhouette and removes its laces, replacing them with a strap across the instep. That single change moves the shoe out of sportswear and into something closer to a school shoe, which is exactly the tension it trades on. Black White Gum keeps the Samba's original colour logic intact: black upper, white Three Stripes, gum sole, the same contrast that made the shape legible from across a pitch. What you get is a women's shoe that reads as familiar and unfamiliar at once, the most recognisable adidas outline in the world wearing a fastening it has never had.
A strap changes the register, so use it. Recipe one: a mid length skirt or wide cropped trousers with a visible sock, since a Mary Jane is designed to show the ankle and the sock becomes part of the outfit. Recipe two: straight leg dark denim with a white shirt, where the black upper and white stripes read as a graphic full stop and the gum sole adds warmth. Good for offices, dinners and long walking days. Without laces the fit is fixed, so try true to size and check that the strap sits flat across your instep. Wipe the leather clean before marks set and use a gum sole eraser rather than water on the midsole.
The Samba spread through European football terrace and casual dressing without adidas engineering it, the same way the Superstar was adopted by hip hop after Run-DMC recorded My Adidas in 1986 unpaid and only then signed the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. Once a silhouette is that widely worn, the interesting move is not a new colour but a structural edit. adidas has hired outside designers to make those edits for decades, from Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 to Stella McCartney from 2004, and the Jane is the in house version of that thinking applied to the shape everyone already owns.
Black leather quarter, a shaped toe overlay, serrated white Three Stripes stitched down the flank, and the Samba's thin flat sole in gum rubber. The strap replaces the lacing system entirely, which changes the fit logic: you cannot tighten a Mary Jane through the midfoot the way you can pull a lace, so the closure and the last do the work instead. Black and white with a gum sole is the most forgiving combination in the Samba range, since the dark upper hides scuffing and the gum sole yellows evenly rather than staining. The low stack gives you real ground feel, which suits walking far more than standing on concrete.
