Designed by Peter Moore and released on 24 May 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a gore-tex upper in Light Curry/Cardinal Red/Sail/Black. Gore-Tex on a Jordan 1 is a collision of two very different eras. The silhouette was drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984, built for an indoor court and a uniform argument, while a waterproof membrane belongs to outdoor equipment. Element releases exist to reconcile the two, taking the most recognisable shape in sneakers and rebuilding it to survive weather. Light curry is the right colour for that project: a warm mustard yellow that reads as workwear or hiking gear rather than sportswear, and which has no relationship at all to the Chicago red, black and white the brand treats as house colours.
Curry yellow needs earth around it. Recipe one: brown or olive workwear trousers with a straight leg, a cream heavy tee, a waxed jacket, so the shoe reads as part of an outdoor kit. Recipe two: black denim with a cuff above the collar, a charcoal knit, a shell jacket, using the yellow as the single warm point. Avoid bright blue, which turns the tone acidic. This is an autumn and winter shoe and the reason to own it is rain. Rinse mud off promptly, let it dry naturally, and avoid heat, which damages membranes and adhesives faster than water ever will.
This line has always absorbed whatever technology Nike had available, which is how a shoe built in 1985 stayed relevant: Nike Air arrived at the second model, carbon fibre shank plates came later for torsional stiffness, Kevlar reinforced laces and uppers appeared on the XV, Flyknit uppers came in from the XXX and the XXXIII went laceless with a FastFit system. An Element build applies that same appetite to the original silhouette instead of to a new one. It is the brand acknowledging that the Jordan 1 is no longer a model in a series; it is a permanent platform that everything else gets tested on.
The title gives you the important thing here, which is Gore-Tex, a waterproof breathable membrane used to keep water out while letting vapour escape, applied to a high cut Jordan 1 upper. Weatherproofing a shoe with this much panelling means sealing the seams and rethinking how the layers meet, so the upper looks softer and more technical than a leather retro. Light curry is a saturated warm tone that shows water marking less than a pale colour but dirt more than a dark one. Jordan Brand does not publish a full material breakdown per colourway, so confirm the lining, the collar treatment and the tread pattern in hand.
