Designed by Peter Moore and released on 8 November 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a canvas upper in Obsidian/French Blue/Sail/Ashen Slate. Obsidian is Jordan Brand's deep navy, and the Craft label tells you this Low was built around surface rather than colour. It exists because the line stopped being a single signature shoe. Nike signed Michael Jordan on 26 October 1984, the first model sold out its 50,000 pair run and passed 150 million dollars in sales, and by 1997 the whole thing had been spun into Jordan Brand, a standalone division inside Nike with its own athletes, apparel and collaborations. That division is what allows a quiet, texture led Low in navy to sit in the same catalogue as the loudest colourways in the line. The Low keeps Peter Moore's original panel layout, cut below the ankle, so Craft reads as material study rather than costume.
Two recipes. Navy on navy: dark indigo raw denim, a navy or charcoal knit, and the shoe disappearing into the leg line, which is the whole argument for a tonal Low. Or use it as ballast: tan chinos, an olive overshirt and cream socks, letting the obsidian anchor a warm palette from the ground up. Lows work with a shorter hem than Mids, so cuff once and let the collar show. Sizing sits close to true with a slim heel, and a thin sock stops the low collar slipping. Brush matte panels dry rather than wet, keep them out of rain where you can, and lift scuffs with a suede style eraser instead of soap and water.
Jordan Brand is a division of Nike, created in 1997, not a separate company, and its scale is why a shoe like this gets made at all: roughly 5.1 billion dollars of Nike revenue in a single recent year, with a reported 150 to 256 million dollars flowing to Jordan himself under the royalty clause written into that first contract. Volume that size funds quiet product, the tonal navy Low that no rapper name checked and no campaign was built around. Wearing Craft Obsidian is a position: you want the silhouette that pulled hip hop and basketball into the same frame, without asking a room to notice you are wearing it.
The Craft designation signals a matte, layered upper instead of the glossy finished leather most Air Jordan 1s carry, with the Swoosh, toe and quarter panels handled as separate textures in near identical navy. Tonal work like this is unforgiving: the shape has to do the job colour usually does, so the panel seams, the perforated toe and the low collar line become the visual detail. Underneath sits the same stitched and cemented rubber cupsole the silhouette has always used, flat and wide enough to stand on all day. Matte surfaces scuff more visibly than coated leather, so the toe box will show your mileage first and should be the part you protect.
