Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 August 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the Iron Grey/White Onyx colourway. Iron Grey and Onyx are both names for the same instinct: take the loudest silhouette in sneakers and turn the volume down until only the shape is left. The Air Jordan 1 was designed by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, sold out its first 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars against a plan of about 3 million dollars over three years, and it did that in colours built to be argued about. A greyscale Mid does the opposite. It relies on the fact that the outline alone is now recognisable from across a street, which is what happens when one shoe becomes a shorthand for an entire decade of culture.
Greyscale is the most flexible thing you can put on your feet. First: black tailored trousers, a charcoal knit and a black overcoat, where the shoe reads as part of a considered outfit rather than as sportswear. Second: dark denim, a white tee and a grey zip up, the daily uniform this colourway was built for. Mids look best with a cuff that shows the collar. Winter is where these earn their keep, but wipe salt off the same day, because salt dries into leather and leaves a white bloom that is difficult to remove. Brush regularly, condition every few months, and store with a tree so the collar keeps its line.
This shoe's cultural weight came from confrontation. The NBA's uniform policy required shoes to be at least 51 percent white, the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before the Air Jordan I released, and Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine and turned the whole thing into the Banned campaign rather than redesigning. Hip hop carried it outward, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers on record. A monochrome Mid is what happens once that history is settled: the shape has earned the right to be worn quietly, with no colour argument attached at all.
Greys are the most practical finish this silhouette comes in and the hardest to photograph well. In daylight the iron and onyx panels separate clearly, under artificial light they collapse into one another, and the seams become the only thing marking the panels apart. That makes the stitching worth checking before purchase. The Mid holds its collar at ankle height, giving more upper than a Low without the full stance of a High. This listing has no style code and no published material split, so assess the leather or synthetic in hand. In use, dark greys hide road dust and scuffing well, but they show salt marks in winter and dry unevenly if you park them near heat.
