Designed by Peter Moore and released on 22 September 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/Light Smoke Grey/Gym Red. Black Toe is a colour block, not a colour, and that is the interesting part. It names a way of dividing the upper, black over the toe, colour through the panels, white underneath, and it belongs to the earliest years of a shoe designed by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, whose first 50,000 pairs sold out and which passed 150 million dollars when Nike had planned for about 3 million dollars over three years. Running that block in red on the Mid, under the SE label where Jordan Brand works outside the OG programme, gives you a shoe that speaks the original grammar in a cut built for streets rather than reissue collectors. Recognition without the queue.
This block is loud enough to be the outfit. First: plain black jeans, a white tee and nothing else, so the shoe supplies all three colours in the frame and everything reads deliberate. Second: grey sweatpants with a black hoodie and white socks, an everyday combination where the red sits as the accent. Mids look wrong under a long break, so cuff once or wear a cropped hem. White midsoles yellow with heat and sun, so dry them at room temperature and store them out of direct light. Brush the black panels separately from the white, since dark dye transfer onto a white midsole is the fastest way to ruin the block.
Red and black on this silhouette carries the Banned story whether you want it to or not. The NBA required shoes to be at least 51 percent white, the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype worn before the Air Jordan I released, and Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine and built its advertising around the confrontation. That is the moment the sneaker market learned transgression sells, and everything from Supreme to Off-White under Virgil Abloh has traded on the same energy since. A Mid in this block is the accessible version of that history, which is precisely the job the Mid has always done in the line.
Three panel colour blocking is a construction detail masquerading as a graphic. The black toe panel, red quarters and white base each meet at a seam, and the quality of those seams is most of what separates a good pair from a poor one, so check the stitching where the black meets the white before anything else. The Mid holds the collar at ankle height, more material than a Low and less than a High. SE releases usually vary material and finish rather than the last.
