Designed by Peter Moore and released on 18 February 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Signal Blue/White/Black. Signal Blue is a Special Edition Mid, and the SE tag is the brand's permission slip to change materials and colour on a pattern it will never redraw. That pattern dates to a Bulls rookie signing on 26 October 1984 and a public release on 1 April 1985, drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, and it survives because it holds any treatment applied to it. Signal Blue is a bright, almost electrical blue, a colour the line only started using once the shoe had stopped being basketball equipment and become clothing. It reads as contemporary rather than archival, which is the honest position for a Mid. Style code DD6834 402.
Strong blue is easiest against neutrals and against denim it does not match. First: black straight leg trousers, a white tee, a grey overshirt, white socks so the blue sits alone. Second: ecru or stone chinos with a single cuff and a navy knit, deliberately using two blues at different depths so the shoe reads as the brighter one. Avoid mid blue jeans, which flatten it. Occasion is daytime and casual. Fit is true to size, narrow at the midfoot, no break in needed. Care: protector spray first, damp cloth only, soft brush for the perforations, and keep soap off the blue since it lifts saturated dye faster than neutral colours.
The 1 is the shape that made sneaker collecting a mass activity, and the reason a bright blue version still carries weight is that the model's meaning was fixed long before the colour existed. The Banned advertising, built on the NBA's uniform rule requiring at least 51 percent white and Nike's willingness to pay the 5,000 dollar per game fine rather than redesign, taught the market that transgression sells. Spike Lee, directing and playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, put the shoe into film language. Rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z wrote it into music.
Standard 1 Mid architecture in leather: wing tip toe with perforations, separate eyestay, stitched Swoosh panel, padded collar just below the ankle bone, rubber cupsole with a forefoot pivot circle. On an SE make up the interest is in how the blue is distributed across those panels and what contrast material sits against it, since the tooling is unchanged. Bright blue leather is a durable choice in practice: it does not show pavement grey like white, and it does not dull like black. The panel that will tell the shoe's age is the toe box, where flex creases cut across the strongest area of colour.
