Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 29 February 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White-Gym Red-Pine Green. A 2.0 in this line means the house has returned to a colourway it already made and rebuilt it, which only happens when the first version earned enough goodwill to be worth revisiting. Pine green over black and white is one of those: dark, forest weighted, closer to a winter coat than to a jersey. The pattern is the original, drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984 and released to the public on 1 April 1985, and the OG High designation is the promise that the shape has not been quietly reshaped. Green also sits outside the Chicago red, black and white entirely, which is what makes it feel adult.
Dark green wants dark company. Recipe one: black denim with a taper, a cream heavy tee, a black bomber, so the green shows only when you move. Recipe two: charcoal trousers, a white shirt, a camel coat, using the green as the base of a muted autumn palette. Skip anything olive, since a second green nearby dulls both. High tops need the hem at or above the collar so the ankle panel and the Wings mark stay visible. Best from autumn through winter. Keep the white base clean early with a damp cloth, brush the green panels dry, and store out of direct sun to protect the dye.
The Air Jordan 1 created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, and OG spec releases are aimed squarely at the people that created. Original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market this model anchors has been valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, so faithful retros carry the weight of comparison in a way a Mid never has to. That collector attention grew out of storytelling rather than performance: Spike Lee directed the earliest advertising while playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and hip hop did the rest, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z all putting the shoes into verses.
OG High keeps the full 1985 geometry: the tall ankle collar, the wrapping quarter panels, the swoosh proud across the side, and the Wings logo, a basketball with wings that marks the earliest era of the line and sits where only a high cut can carry it. Pine green against black reads as a single dark mass from a distance and separates into two colours up close, which is a quieter effect than a red and white blocking. White keeps the base and midsole legible so the silhouette still reads. No full material breakdown is published per colourway, so confirm the leather finish and the collar padding in hand before assuming parity with an earlier release.
