Designed by Peter Moore and released on 24 May 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Court Purple/Sail-University Gold-Black. LA to Chicago is a Nike SB take on the Air Jordan 1 Retro High, and the name does the work: two cities, two colour identities, one shoe split between them. Chicago is where the story started, the red, black and white palette that now functions as a brand colour in itself, and Los Angeles is where skateboarding adopted the silhouette long after basketball had finished with it. Putting an SB build under a Jordan 1 acknowledges something that happened without permission from anyone: skaters wore this shoe because the flat sole and high collar suited them, decades after Peter Moore designed it for a rookie guard.
Skate builds want relaxed clothing. Wide leg jeans that stack over the collar with a plain tee and a work jacket is the natural setting, and it lets the split colour show as you move. For something sharper, black trousers with a cropped hem and a grey sweatshirt puts the two tone upper fully on display. If you actually skate in it, accept the toe will wear first and rotate a second pair for everyday use. Size to your usual Jordan 1 High, keep the sole edge clean, and expect the padded areas to compress with use rather than stay showroom fresh.
The Jordan 1's reach beyond basketball is the whole story of the line. Nike's Banned advertising, built on the league's uniform rule requiring at least 51 percent white and the 5,000 dollar per game fine the company paid rather than redesign, taught the market that transgression sells, and hip hop and skateboarding both picked up the shoe for their own reasons. Air Jordan is also what made sneaker collecting a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs trading around twenty thousand dollars on StockX. A skate built Jordan 1 sits at the intersection of a collector object and a shoe meant to be destroyed.
The SB designation means the shoe is built for a different kind of abuse than the original was. Skate versions of a silhouette prioritise underfoot feel, board grip through the sole and reinforcement where the upper takes repeated impact, which is a different brief from lateral containment on hardwood. Above that it stays a Jordan 1 Retro High: layered panels, a tall collar, the Wings mark and a padded tongue. The split colour treatment makes the panel edges the visual event, so the two halves of the shoe should read cleanly against each other. Expect the toe and the ollie area to be the first places any wear shows.
