Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 29 September 2018 as part of the Air Jordan 5 line. This release has the Multi-Color/Multi-Color colourway. The Wings logo, a basketball with wings, marks the earliest era of the line, before the Jumpman became the house mark. Building an Air Jordan 5 Retro around that logo is a deliberate reach backwards past the 5's own generation to the brand's first identity. The 5 itself belongs to the Tinker Hatfield stretch, when Nike handed the line to a designer who turned a signature basketball shoe into a design series with its own language. A Wings make up treats the shoe as a display piece for brand history rather than as a colourway, which is why it runs multicoloured rather than team based. Style code AV2405 900.
A multicoloured 5 is the loudest item in any outfit, so everything else goes quiet. First: black straight leg trousers with a break at the collar, a black crewneck, no other colour anywhere, letting the panels read as a single graphic. Second: raw indigo denim with a single cuff and a plain grey sweatshirt, using blue as a neutral background. Occasion is social, dry weather, and floors you can see. Fit is true to size with a secure midfoot once the lace lock is set. Care: brush suede sections dry and in one direction, damp cloth for leather sections, protector spray before first wear, and never soak a mixed material upper.
The brand's own logos are now cultural objects. The Jumpman came from Peter Moore having Jordan recreate a split legged leap in Bulls gear, and the Wings mark predates it. Jordan Brand became a standalone Nike division in 1997 and by 2022 was generating about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike, which is what makes heritage releases like this viable: there is a collector audience large enough to buy a shoe about a logo. That audience exists because Air Jordan created sneaker collecting as a mass activity in the first place, powered by hip hop, by Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon campaigns and by the Banned advertising.
The Air Jordan 5's identity is structural: the jagged shark tooth pattern along the midsole, the lace lock at the throat, the high eyelet row and the reflective tongue. A Wings edition keeps all of that and uses the panels as a canvas, mixing materials and colours across sections so the geometry stays readable while the surface changes. Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the Air Jordan II and sits under a rubber outsole. Multi material uppers need multi material care: the finish that works on smooth leather will mark suede, so you clean this shoe panel by panel rather than all at once.
