Released on 11 June 2024 and part of the Jordan Spizike line. This release has a leather upper in White/Pure Platinum/Obsidian. Obsidian is the most sensible colour you can put on a hybrid. The Spizike takes its shape from the design vocabulary Tinker Hatfield built across the numbered line from the Air Jordan III onward, and it carries the name of Spike Lee, who directed Nike's earliest Air Jordan advertising and played Mars Blackmon in it. A deep navy version of that in a grade school size run is the practical end of the idea: a shoe with a lot of construction going on, calmed down enough to be worn every day by someone who does not care about any of the history yet. That is not a compromise, it is the whole point of a size run.
Two ways to wear it. First, school neutral: grey or khaki trousers with a white shirt or tee, where the navy reads as almost formal and nothing clashes. Second, sport: black or navy track pants with a hoodie, keeping the whole fit dark so the shoe merges into it. Navy hides daily wear well, which makes this a genuine five days a week option. Brush the seams where dust collects, wipe with a barely damp cloth rather than soaking, avoid soap on suede or nubuck panels, and keep the pair out of direct sunlight, which pulls navy towards a dull purple over time.
The Spizike exists because Spike Lee's advertising made Air Jordan legible to people who did not follow basketball, which is the same reason the line eventually reached music, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers, and then reached a resale economy valued around 2 billion dollars. Jordan Brand generated about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike in 2022, and a grade school hybrid in navy is part of how a number that size gets made. Not every shoe in the range is chasing an anniversary, and the ones that are not are usually the ones that get worn out properly.
A dark navy upper does something specific to a multi panel shoe. It merges the sections into one silhouette, so instead of reading as a collage you get a single dark mass with the shape doing all the talking. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the Air Jordan II and sits underneath here over a rubber outsole. The low cut clears the ankle, which suits a school shoe far better than a full height hybrid would. Navy is one of the most forgiving colours to own, since dust reads as texture rather than damage, but it does fade in strong sunlight, so storage away from windows is worth the effort.
