Released on 30 June 2024 and part of Nike's Air Zoom Pegasus 41 line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Pure Platinum/Summit White/Black. Running is the founding subject of this company, not a category it entered later. Bill Bowerman coached track at the University of Oregon and believed American runners deserved lighter shoes than the domestic market gave them, which is why he and his former runner Phil Knight started importing in 1964, and why he later poured rubber into his wife's waffle iron to make a lighter sole. The Pegasus is the direct descendant of that impulse: the shoe Nike builds for the ordinary daily run, revised year after year rather than reinvented. This is the forty first edition, in White Black, the cleanest possible reading of a trainer that spends most of its life invisible under a pair of legs. It is a workhorse first and a colourway second.
This is a road shoe, so use it as one. Easy runs and long runs in shorts and a technical tee, with a low no show sock, is the obvious use. The second use is the gym floor and the commute: white on black works with grey sweat shorts and a plain tee, or with black joggers and a windbreaker for the walk in. Do not squat heavy in it, because a cushioned running midsole is a poor lifting platform. Go half a size up from your dress shoe length and leave a thumb of room at the toe, as feet swell across a long run. Rotate two pairs if you run daily, retire them when the midsole feels flat, and clean the white with a soft brush and mild soap rather than a washing machine.
Nike's cultural entry ran through track before it ran through anything else. Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon, became the brand's first track endorser and remains its symbol of running as attitude rather than a hobby, and the line that made Nike a household voice arrived from that same world: Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988, first aired on 1 July 1988 with the 80 year old runner Walt Stack. Advertising Age later named it one of the top five slogans of the twentieth century, and it sits in the Smithsonian. A Pegasus is what that slogan actually looks like on a Tuesday morning, worn by someone with no sponsor and no split times worth publishing.
Air is the point. Nike Air is a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, and on a daily trainer it is there to survive thousands of repeated foot strikes rather than to feel dramatic on the first run. The White Black treatment puts a white midsole under a mostly white upper with black across the Swoosh and the heel, which means the foam will show dirt fast and honestly. Expect an engineered mesh upper built to move air, since Nike's whole soft goods logic since Dri-FIT has been about getting moisture off the body rather than holding it. No weight or stack figure is published to you here. Judge the shoe on the brand's daily trainer brief: neutral, repeatable, forgiving of imperfect form.
