Released on 19 May 2025 and part of On Running's Cloudsurfer Trail line. This release has a mesh upper in Horizon/Cream. On's founding question was asked on road and in triathlon, but the company took the same pod logic off tarmac fairly quickly, and it sponsors trail runners alongside its track and road athletes through the On Athletics Club. The Cloudsurfer Trail is that translation, and this women's pair lands in Horizon, a colourway that behaves like light on a ridge line rather than a safety flag. The parent idea has not changed since Olivier Bernhard glued hose sections to a sole in Zurich in 2010: soft on landing, firm on take off. What changes off road is that the landing is rarely flat, which is why the pod geometry, built to give support in more than one direction, has an argument to make on broken ground.
Two ways to use it. On trail: a technical short or tight, a light wind layer and a running vest, with the shoe handling mixed surface loops where you move from packed path to loose ground. Off trail: straight leg cargos, a fleece half zip and a beanie for cold weather walking and travel days, where Horizon's graded tones sit well against olive and stone. Women's sizing runs true, but take a half size up if you run long, since feet swell on descents. Lace with a heel lock for downhill sections. Rinse only the outsole, brush the upper dry, and never dry it near heat, which stiffens the geometry that does the cushioning work.
The brand's cultural weight comes from sport, not styling. On runs the On Athletics Club under coach Dathan Ritzenhein, backs road, track and trail athletes including David Kilgore, and built bobsleigh shoes for the 2022 Winter Olympics, which tells you how literally it treats terrain specific problems. The wider audience arrived through Roger Federer's shareholding in November 2019 and The Roger in July 2020, but a trail shoe sits on the other side of the house, the side where the brand is judged by people counting kilometres rather than outfits. Wearing the Cloudsurfer Trail is closer to the original argument, a Swiss engineered running shoe that got popular partly because it looks like what it is.
Horizon is a graded colourway, so the shoe carries tonal shifts across the upper instead of a single flat block. Below that sits CloudTec, foam engineered into specialised hollow geometries rather than a cushioning compound, compressing horizontally as well as vertically so the shoe can absorb an off angle landing and still return you to a straight push off. On builds this family with variants tuned to purpose across its CloudTec line, and the multi directional support is the part that matters on trail. Swiss designed in Zurich, produced in Indonesia and Vietnam. After off road use, knock the outsole clean while dry, since mud left in the cavities sets hard and dulls both grip and the look.
