Released on 18 January 2024 and part of the Arahi 7 line. This release has a knit upper in Black/Black. Full black is the most practical version of a support shoe, and the Arahi 7 is Hoka's support leaning daily trainer, the model where the brand's founding idea gets rebuilt for feet that roll inward. That idea started in Annecy in 2009, when two former Salomon employees decided the fastest way downhill was far more cushioning than the industry believed in. In black, none of that engineering is on display. The wide flared heel and the deep sidewall stack fuse into one shape, and what you are left with is a shoe that will sit under a uniform, a work trouser or a pair of black jeans without ever announcing what it does.
Two ways to run it. First, work compatible: black trousers or scrubs, dark socks, and a shoe that reads as plain footwear rather than as kit. Second, monochrome casual: black jeans, black tee, grey outer layer, letting the stack provide the only real volume in the outfit. Use it for daily road mileage, long shifts, commuting and travel, particularly if a neutral shoe leaves your arches aching. Fit true to size with a thumbnail at the toe. Black hides dirt but not creasing, so unlace it rather than kicking it off, and rotate with a second pair so the midsole gets recovery days.
Hoka has become one of the fastest growing running brands of its generation, reporting 1.8 billion US dollars of revenue in 2024 after Deckers Brands, the group behind UGG and Teva, bought the company in 2013 and scaled its distribution. That growth was driven less by racing than by people who need their footwear to survive a working week: hospital staff on twelve hour shifts, commuters, and runners who log steady mileage rather than chase times. An all black stability trainer is that buyer's default. It answers a dress code and a biomechanical need at once, which is a combination very few running shoes manage.
Hoka builds support without the stiff medial post the category was traditionally built around. The patented J-Frame runs a band of firmer foam in a J along the inside edge, resisting the foot collapsing inward while the rest of the ride stays soft. Combined with the house geometry, a low heel to toe drop under a rounded sole, the guidance arrives while you are moving forward rather than as resistance. The heel is cradled inside the midsole walls rather than perched on top. Black is the easiest finish to live with, but the foam edge is where age shows first, so clean the midsole regularly with mild soap, keep solvents away, and dry the pair naturally.
