Released on 18 January 2024 and part of the Arahi 7 line. This release has a knit upper in Black/White. Black over white is the clearest way to read a Hoka, because the split between upper and midsole shows you exactly how much foam is under your foot. On the Arahi 7, the brand's support leaning daily trainer, that matters. The model exists because the founding idea from Annecy in 2009, an oversized cushioned outsole made so two former Salomon employees could run downhill faster, needed a version for feet that collapse inward. The white stack under a black upper puts the shoe's proportions on display rather than hiding them, which is a confident choice for a category that usually tries to look discreet.
Two combinations. First, sharp monochrome: black trousers or jeans with a white tee, so the shoe repeats the outfit's own contrast. Second, training: black shorts and a grey top, keeping everything simple and letting the white stack mark your stride. Use it for daily road running, long walking days, commuting and standing shifts where you want visible support but not a clinical look. Fit true to size with a thumbnail at the toe. The white midsole is the part that ages the pair visually, so clean the foam edge weekly, avoid dragging your feet through mud, and rotate pairs to give the cushioning a rest.
Hoka arrived in 2009 as a deliberate contradiction. The running industry was moving toward minimalism and barefoot style shoes, and the brand went the other way with midsoles two to three times thicker than normal, which the press labelled maximalist. Black on white is the colourway that makes that argument visible, since the pale midsole shows the height the brand was mocked for and eventually won with. The same shape later went mainstream through hospital corridors and then through fashion, which means a pair like this is now read as normal rather than extreme, a shift that took the better part of a decade.
Hoka's answer to stability is foam geometry, not stiff hardware. The patented J-Frame runs firmer foam in a J shape along the inside edge so the shoe resists inward roll while the rest of the ride stays soft, and the house geometry, a low heel to toe drop under a rounded sole, keeps that support moving you forward. The heel sits inside the midsole walls rather than on top of them, which is where the planted feeling comes from. The two tone finish means two cleaning jobs: the black upper hides dust while the white midsole shows every scuff. Use a foam cleaner on the stack, a soft brush on the upper, and dry both away from heat.
