Released on 18 January 2024 and part of the Arahi 7 line. This release has a knit upper in Oat Milk/Barley. Oat Milk and Barley is a colourway named after breakfast, which tells you where running shoes now sit in most people's lives. Two warm, pale neutrals give the Arahi 7 a domestic softness that has nothing to do with racing. The model itself is Hoka's support minded daily trainer, built from the same founding logic the brand started with in Annecy in 2009, when two former Salomon employees decided far more cushioning was the answer to running mountains faster. Dressed in cream and grain tones, the exaggerated sidewall stops looking like performance equipment and starts looking like something you own several of.
Recipe one, full neutral: cream wide leg trousers, an oatmeal knit, and the shoe finishing a tonal outfit without a single hard edge. Recipe two, denim: light wash jeans with a white tee and a tan jacket, where the barley tones pick up the leather. It suits city walking, long standing days, easy road mileage and warm weather travel. Fit true to size with a thumbnail of room at the toe. This is the colourway that most needs a protector spray before first wear, prompt spot cleaning, and a second pair in rotation so it is not asked to survive every wet day of the week.
The brand's own language softened as its audience widened. Hoka shortened its name from Hoka One One to simply Hoka on 22 December 2021, saying the shorter version was easier on the lips, and the palette moved in the same direction: from the loud colour blocking that announced its arrival to neutrals named after pantry staples. That shift tracks the third wave of the brand's growth, when the maximal silhouette crossed into fashion and Hoka started working with partners from outside running. A colourway like Oat Milk and Barley is aimed at someone who will wear this shoe with clothes far more often than with a race number.
Stability here is a matter of where the foam is firm rather than what plastic has been added. The patented J-Frame lays a J shaped band of firmer foam along the inside edge to resist the foot rolling inward, while the rest of the midsole stays soft, and the house geometry, a low heel to toe drop under a rounded sole, keeps the shoe rolling forward rather than braking. The heel sits inside the midsole walls rather than perched on top. Warm pale tones are the hardest to keep looking new, since dust reads as discolouration rather than as dirt. Protect the upper before the first wear, brush it regularly, and clean stains the day they land.
