Released on 14 March 2024 and part of Hoka's Clifton line. This release has a knit upper in Cerise/Cloudless. Cerise with Cloudless is a deep pink upper against a pale sky blue, one of the boldest pairings the Clifton 9 was given, and it works because this is the model with the least to prove. The Clifton is Hoka's cushioned road daily trainer, the shoe that took the brand's founding idea out of the mountains and made it usable for people running ordinary loops. The ninth version was the one that sat in most people's rotation, and in this colourway it stops behaving like equipment. Pink and blue on an exaggerated sidewall stack is a straight line back to the brand's early insistence on colour when everyone else was going minimal.
Recipe one, sport: black leggings or shorts with a plain white top, and the pink and blue carry every bit of the colour. Recipe two, street: ecru or cream wide leg trousers, a pale blue shirt that echoes the Cloudless panels, and no other bright pieces, since this shoe refuses to share. Fit true to size with a thumbnail of room at the front. Protect the pale sections before the first wear, spot clean rather than washing the whole shoe, and rotate pairs so the foam has a day between outings to recover its bounce.
The Clifton is the shape fashion collaborators keep returning to. Outdoor Voices reworked a Clifton 4, Satisfy Running built a trail ready Clifton LS, and the model has become the default entry point for anyone meeting Hoka for the first time. Alongside that, the brand has worked with designer Nicole McLaughlin, whose Mafate Three2 paired a Vibram sole unit with a four in one gaiter system in a High Risk yellow and red colourway, and with Brain Dead, BEAMS and Bodega. Strong colour pairings like Cerise and Cloudless belong to that conversation. They are chosen for how the shoe photographs and how it sits against clothes, not just how it runs.
The Clifton's whole argument is cushion without weight, the low weight to cushion ratio Hoka has chased since it first built an oversized outsole. Underfoot, the house geometry, a low heel to toe drop under a rounded sole, keeps easy miles rolling so a soft shoe never feels like it is holding you back. The heel drops into the midsole walls rather than sitting on top of them, which is where the calm comes from at this stack height. Bright pink holds its tone well but the pale blue and the foam will pick up marks fastest. Clean early with mild soap and a soft brush, dry in shade, and keep the pair out of the washing machine.
