Released on 5 September 2023 and part of the Mach X line. This release has a jacquard upper in Black/Silver. Mach X is the Mach idea pushed further, the version aimed at the workouts that sit between everyday running and racing. Hoka reached the point of being able to build a shoe this specific only after real scale: a brand founded in 2009 in Annecy by two former Salomon trail runners, whose entire first production run was six hundred pairs, reported 1.8 billion US dollars in revenue in 2024. That growth is what funds a lineup deep enough to have a dedicated session shoe. Black with Silver is the version that looks like equipment rather than kit, dark and metallic, with the sidewall stack still unmistakably readable in profile.
Two uses. Workout day: Black and Silver Mach X with split shorts and a fitted top for intervals, tempo runs and progression sessions, the efforts where you want propulsion and still want protection. Long steady runs: pair with tights and a light jacket in cold weather, treating it as the quicker half of a two-shoe rotation. Fit true to length with a snug, secure midfoot. Do not use it as your only shoe, since session shoes wear faster than daily trainers. Air dry with the insole removed after every hard run, wipe the mesh by hand, and never machine wash or heat dry.
For a company that spent its early years being labelled maximalist as a criticism, having a serious workout shoe in the line is a kind of vindication. Hoka arrived in 2009 as a deliberate contradiction, building midsoles two to three times thicker than normal while the industry chased minimal shoes, and it was only after Deckers Brands acquired it on 1 April 2013 that distribution and volume really scaled. The performance credibility never came from marketing: it came from ultramarathon and mountain trail racing, where the cushioning advantage on long descents was decisive. Black and silver is that heritage in its least decorative form.
A session shoe has to be light and still hold up to hard efforts, which is exactly the low weight to cushion ratio the brand was founded on, applied under pressure. The upper is thin engineered mesh cut close to the foot with padding only where it prevents slipping, since anything more is weight you are lifting several thousand times. Hoka's rocker geometry is the mechanism that turns a tall stack into forward roll rather than sinking, and it matters most when you are running at pace on tired legs. Black and silver flatten the silhouette visually, so the shoe looks lower and sharper than the actual platform height suggests.
