Released on 28 February 2025 and part of the 992 line. This release has a suede upper in Rose Smoke/Misty Rose. The 992 launched in 2006, sitting in the 99x sequence between the 991 in 2001 and the 993 in 2008, and it has always been the quiet favourite in that family: heavy, honest and made in New England. Aged Well is a Joe Freshgoods collaboration on that shoe, and the name tells you the intent, treating a Made in USA runner as something that improves through use rather than something to be preserved. New Balance's collaboration programme runs on designers and independents rather than mass celebrity, which is why a project like this one gets to change the shoe's palette and framing rather than just its logo placement. It is the archive being interpreted, not reissued.
A 992 is a substantial shoe, so build the outfit around its volume. Recipe one: wide, slightly cropped trousers in a heavy cotton, a boxy sweatshirt and a work jacket, the proportions the collaboration palette is drawn for. Recipe two: straight leg jeans with a light stack, a plain tee and a suede or corduroy overshirt, which lets the collaboration colours read as intentional rather than loud. Best for standing all day, gallery and studio hours, travel and city walking. Use the width fittings, since the 992 rewards accuracy. Brush suede and mesh dry, never machine wash a Made in USA build, spot clean carefully, and air dry away from heat.
New Balance's collaborations are built around designers and independents: Aime Leon Dore, whose founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, British designer Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018, Kawhi Leonard on the OMN1S from February 2019, and Action Bronson across several models including a 990v6 Baklava. The 99x family is the natural canvas for all of it, because it already carried cultural weight without a campaign: the archetypal American dad shoe, favoured by Steve Jobs and worn by Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, then reclaimed by normcore and high fashion in the 2010s. This collaboration works inside that inherited meaning.
Made in USA is a genuine product signature at New Balance, stamped on the tongue badge and produced in the company's New England factories, and it is the reason the 99x line prices above competitors. Only specific lines carry it. Under the upper sits the family's midsole logic: ENCAP, introduced with the 995 in 1986, a moulded polyurethane rim encapsulating a soft EVA core, so polyurethane supplies structure, durability and low compression set while EVA absorbs shock. The 992 is a wide, supportive shoe built for standing and walking rather than for lightness. Multiple width fittings are the brand's oldest technical promise, and on a shoe this substantial they matter more than usual.
