UNC To Chicago puts two chapters of the same career on one shoe. North Carolina is Michael Jordan's own university and one of the college programmes Jordan Brand carries, and Chicago is where Nike signed him as a Bulls rookie on 26 October 1984. The colours those two places contribute, a pale university blue and a hard red, have never sat together in a standard colourway, so splitting them across the panel map is the whole concept. On a faithful Low OG, with Peter Moore's blocking intact and the collar dropped, the split reads instantly. It is a biography told in colour, which is a more elegant way to do heritage than printing a date on the tongue.
Recipe one, neutral frame: white or cream trousers with a grey knit, nothing else coloured, so both halves of the shoe read cleanly. Recipe two, pick a side: navy or blue tinted denim with a white tee to lean into the university blue, or a black outfit with a red cap to lean into the Chicago half. Occasion is daytime, campus, spring and summer. Fit is standard length, close low collar, thin sock. Care: clean the white and pale blue panels the same day they mark, brush dry before using water, keep harsh cleaners away from the red, and store out of sun so the two dyes do not fade at different rates.
Jordan Brand's college roster includes North Carolina, Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan, and the brand later moved outside basketball entirely, taking on Michigan's football programme in 2016 and Paris Saint-Germain in 2018. Chicago red, black and white still function as house colours alongside the number 23. The wider culture came from elsewhere: Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon in the earliest advertising, and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z putting the shoes into lyrics. A shoe that names two cities is speaking to people who already know the story, which is most of the audience for a Low OG at this point.
Leather panels in university blue, red and white, arranged so the two palettes divide the shoe rather than blend, on a white midsole and rubber outsole, cut to the low collar. The low collar is padded and close, relying on lacing for hold. As the first model in the line, this predates the Nike Air cushioning that entered with the second shoe, so the platform is a stitched cupsole and foam wedge: firm and flat, made for pavement. Split colourways demand even cleaning, because if one half ages faster than the other the concept collapses. The pale blue is the more delicate of the two dyes, so protect that side first.
