Released on 27 June 2023 and part of New Balance's 2002R line. This release has a suede upper in Pink Sand/Quartz Pink. Pink Sand is a soft, dusty pink with warmth in it, the kind of colour that only works on a silhouette with enough hardware to balance it, and the 2002R has exactly that. The shape belongs to New Balance's running derived family, the part of the catalogue that takes the brand's technical history and puts it on pavements. That history is not marketing: the company started in 1906 outside Boston as the New Balance Arch Support Company, made the Trackster in 1960 as the first running shoe offered in varying widths, and has been privately held under Jim Davis since 1972, which is why it kept building complicated runners when the industry simplified. A pale pink makeup on that inheritance is a deliberately unserious gesture from a very serious house. The code is GC2002SK.
Utility
Two recipes. Ecru wide leg trousers with a white tee and a light grey cardigan puts the pink in a warm neutral family, which is the easiest way to wear it. Or washed light denim with a chocolate brown knit, where the brown pulls the warmth out of the sand tone. Wear it for weekends, brunches, campus days and travel, not for anything that involves standing in mud. Buy true to length and use width fittings rather than sizing up. Influence
The reason a pink New Balance is not a contradiction is that this brand's cultural status was never built on toughness. It came from plainness: the 990 as the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort and not status, favoured by Steve Jobs and later worn by Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff. When normcore and then high fashion reclaimed that plainness in the 2010s, the door opened for the whole colour spectrum, because the shape was already understood. Soft pinks and sands on a technical runner are what a house looks like once it stops apologising for being a comfort brand.
Construction
Pink Sand is a light colourway, and light colourways on layered runners age in a specific way: the panels that touch the ground and the toe box go first, while the upper stays clean far longer than people expect. Plan for that. The 2002R's construction helps here, since the shape is built from many small overlays rather than one large panel, so wear reads as texture instead of as damage. Underfoot, the house logic is structure and cushioning handled separately, the principle established when ENCAP arrived with the 995 in 1986 with a polyurethane rim around a soft foam core. Expect a substantial, supportive platform rather than a minimal one, and expect the shoe to feel best when the width fitting is right rather than when the laces are tight.
