Released on 16 August 2022 and part of New Balance's 550 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Pink. White with pink is the 550 at its most approachable, and the BBW code marks it as the women's cut of a shoe that started life on a basketball court. The pink is doing something specific here: on a silhouette this plain, a soft accent colour is the difference between a shoe that disappears and one that has a personality. New Balance rarely designs for charm, having spent its history solving fit problems that began with arch supports in 1906, so when charm turns up in the catalogue it usually arrives through colour rather than through shape. That is the case here, and the restraint is what keeps it wearable.
Soft pink reads better with warm neutrals than with brights. Recipe one: cream or beige wide leg trousers with a white top, a light monochrome look where the pink is the only colour and does not have to fight for it. Recipe two: light wash denim with a grey sweatshirt, casual and cool toned, with the pink softening the whole thing. Skip red or orange, which flatten the accent. The low profile means it works with cropped jeans and with a full break trouser alike. Care: foam cleaner on the white leather, cream polish on scuffs, a midsole eraser on the foxing, and shoe trees to keep the toe crease shallow.
The 550's popularity came from fashion, not sport, and it followed the path New Balance's whole archive took. The 990 became the archetypal American dad shoe, plain and comfortable, with documented wearers including Jennifer Garner, and normcore turned that plainness into a design position before high fashion adopted it and the brand made it official by appointing Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis creative director of Made in USA in April 2021. A white and pink court shoe is that story at its most everyday: an archive shape, a soft colourway, and no requirement that anyone recognise the reference for it to work.
White leather forms the base with pink panels laid over it, a two material colour story where leather does all the structural work. That means a firm first week while the upper softens across the toe flex point, and a shoe that holds its silhouette for years rather than slumping. The sole is a low court platform rather than a cushioned running unit, so the ride is firm and the stance is close to the ground, which is what lets this sit under a trouser hem cleanly. New Balance's multiple width fittings matter on any leather upper, and especially in a women's cut, where a narrow foot in a standard width will crease the toe box deeply within weeks.
