Origin
Released on 14 November 2023 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Driftwood/Mindful Grey/Castlerock. Driftwood and Castlerock is a colourway built from names for weathered things, a pale washed-out beige against a heavy grey, and it gives the 9060 the look of an object shaped by use rather than by design. That reading suits the model, which takes the 99x running family, the line that begins with the 990 in 1982 and runs to the 990v6, and warps its geometry into something curvier and stranger. New Balance can afford to be odd here because the archive underneath is unimpeachable. The company has been privately held since Jim Davis bought it in 1972, when it had six employees making about thirty pairs a day.
Utility
Two neutrals give you two anchors. Recipe one is warm: stone wide leg trousers, a beige knit, a brown cap, so driftwood ties into the clothing and castlerock grounds the outfit. Recipe two is cool: charcoal trousers with a grey hoodie, where the dark grey base matches and the pale panels stop it going flat. Give the shoe trouser width, since its volume needs matching. Good for long walking days, travel and everyday city wear rather than sport. Pale beige panels are the weak point: protect before wearing, brush dust away before it sets, clean with mild soap on a soft cloth and dry away from direct heat.
Influence
Neutral colour is how the 9060 crossed over. The shape is aggressive, but in washed greys and beiges it slots into wardrobes that would never accept a loud sneaker, which mirrors how New Balance itself became fashionable. The 990 family turned into the American dad shoe, the plain grey comfort default with documented wearers including Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and normcore and high fashion reclaimed that plainness in the 2010s. New Balance responded by treating the archive as a fashion line, formalised when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021. This colourway is that logic applied to a distorted shape.
Construction
Driftwood carries the light, Castlerock carries the weight. A colourway split like this uses the pale tone across the upper panels and the darker grey through the base, the overlays and the side wall block N, which lets the 9060's sculpted side wall and inflated midsole shaping read as depth rather than as decoration. The shoe is substantial underfoot, an inheritance from the 99x line and from New Balance's ENCAP thinking, where a moulded polyurethane rim encapsulates a soft EVA core so support survives without deadening shock absorption. As always with this brand, the width fitting is a real tool rather than a marketing line, so use it before changing length.
