Origin
Released on 15 March 2024 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a mesh upper in Moonbeam/Vintage Rose/Moonrock. The 9060 is what happens when a brand is allowed to distort its own archive instead of reissuing it. Everything in the shape is borrowed from the 99x family, the line that began with the 990 in 1982 and ran through the 991, 992, 993 and every numbered revision after, then swollen and warped until the references stop being literal. That family is the reason New Balance means anything culturally at all, the grey running shoe adopted for comfort and then reclaimed as a design position. Moonbeam Vintage Rose takes the inheritance and drains the colour out of it, a soft off white base lifted by a dusty rose that reads faded rather than pink, which is the exact register the 99x archive lives in.
Utility
Moonbeam and vintage rose want soft, washed clothing rather than crisp tailoring. First recipe: cream wide leg trousers, an oatmeal knit and a light brown suede jacket, the rose reading as a tonal step rather than a contrast. Second: light wash straight jeans with a faded burgundy tee, letting the rose pick up the shirt. The 9060 is a chunky shoe with a lot of visual mass, so it needs volume above it and looks wrong under a slim tapered trouser. Sizing runs slightly long for many people, so try before committing if you are between sizes. Protect the pale mesh before first wear, brush suede dry, and clean the white midsole with a soft brush rather than anything abrasive.
Influence
New Balance's archive stopped being nostalgia and became a fashion line when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, formalising what the culture had already decided. The 9060 belongs to the same shift, the 99x silhouette treated as raw material. The lineage it exaggerates was worn plainly by people who were not trying: Steve Jobs was a documented wearer of the 990, as were Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff. Action Bronson has produced several New Balance collaborations including a 990v6 Baklava, which shows how far the family has travelled from suburban running. Rose over off white is that story with the volume turned down.
Construction
A layered upper of mesh with suede and synthetic overlays, built in panels so the moonbeam base and rose accents sit as separate planes rather than printed graphics. Underneath is the wavy stacked midsole with visible ABZORB cushioning, the proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend New Balance uses to disperse heel strike impact before it travels up into the knee and hip. ABZORB is softer and lighter than the ENCAP construction under the 990 and 574, and less structurally supportive, which is the correct trade on a shoe designed for standing and walking rather than mileage. The pale base is the honest warning here: moonbeam is a colourway that records everything it touches.
