Origin
Released on 1 April 2025 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in New Spruce/White. New Spruce White is the 9060 at its most legible, a clean white base with a deep muted green running through the panelling. The 9060 exists because New Balance's 99x line, from the 990 of 1982 through the 991, 992, 993 and every revision after, became too culturally loaded to simply reissue again. So the brand exaggerated it instead, taking the proportions and the layering of those running shoes and warping them into something with no straight lines left. White is the version that shows the geometry most clearly, since there is no colour blocking to hide behind, and spruce green stops it from reading as a plain white sneaker. It is the archive rebuilt as a shape rather than as a memory.
Utility
White with spruce green is a spring and summer proposition. First recipe: off white cargo trousers, a white tee and an olive lightweight jacket, letting the green in the shoe answer the green above it. Second: pale blue denim with a cream knit, where the white base keeps everything bright and the green anchors it. The 9060 carries real visual bulk, so give it wide or straight legs rather than tapered ones, and let the hem sit on top of the shoe. Sizing can run a touch long, so try before buying if you are between sizes. Protect the white mesh before first wear, clean the midsole with a soft brush and mild soap, and never bleach it.
Influence
The 99x lineage this shoe distorts was worn by people who were not performing anything. Steve Jobs was a documented wearer of the 990, and Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff have all been documented in it. That plainness became a design position in the 2010s, and the brand's archive was formally handed to fashion when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021. The 9060 is the loudest expression of that shift, and white with green is the version that gets read as design rather than as heritage. Action Bronson's run of New Balance collaborations, including a 990v6 Baklava, marks the same distance travelled.
Construction
Layered mesh with suede and synthetic overlays across a white base, with spruce green panels and a green block N set into the side wall. The midsole is the stacked wavy platform with visible ABZORB, New Balance's proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend, engineered to disperse heel strike impact before it reaches the knees and hips. ABZORB is plusher and lighter than the ENCAP polyurethane and EVA construction under the 990 and 574, and deliberately less structurally rigid, which fits a shoe made for pavement hours rather than mileage. White uppers on a chunky midsole collect scuffing along the widest part of the sole first, so the sidewall is where this colourway ages.
