Released on 26 September 2023 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Washed Burgundy/Slate Grey/Angora. Washed Burgundy is the 9060 in its most adult colourway, a deep wine tone taken down to something dusty and worn rather than rich. It suits a company that has never really performed wealth. New Balance has been privately held under Jim Davis since 1972, when he bought it with six employees making around thirty pairs a day, and it built its business on domestic manufacturing and technical fit rather than on marketing spectacle. The 9060 borrows the panel logic and proportion of the 99x running line and exaggerates it, so a colour this saturated could easily have tipped into costume. Washing it back is what keeps the shoe wearable, and keeps it recognisable as this brand rather than any other.
Utility
Burgundy is a colour, so let it be the only one. First recipe: charcoal grey wide trousers, a black knit and a grey overcoat, the shoe supplying every bit of warmth in the outfit. Second: raw indigo jeans with a cream cable knit, where burgundy and indigo hold each other without clashing. Avoid pairing it with brown, which muddies both. The 9060 is bulky, so give it wide or straight legs and a hem that rests on the shoe. Try before buying if you are between sizes, since it can run slightly long. Spray suede protector before first wear, brush dry rather than washing, and store away from direct sunlight to stop the wine tone fading unevenly.
Influence
New Balance's rise happened without a plan. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, chosen for comfort rather than status, and Steve Jobs was a documented wearer, as were Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff. That accidental ordinariness is what normcore and then high fashion reclaimed, and it is the inheritance the 9060 is built on. The brand made the shift official by appointing Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, and it now runs a resale programme called Reconsidered, treating its own shoes as objects worth a second life. Burgundy is the grown up end of that world.
Construction
Layered mesh with suede and synthetic overlays in graded burgundy tones, panelled so the darker sections shadow the lighter ones and the block N sits cut into the side wall. The midsole is the stacked wavy platform with visible ABZORB, the proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend New Balance uses to disperse heel strike impact before it reaches the knees and hips, plusher and lighter than the ENCAP construction that supports the 990 and 574. Deep reds in suede are the colour most vulnerable to sun bleaching and to water spotting, both of which show as pale patches rather than dirt, so this is a colourway that rewards a protector spray and punishes neglect.
